Booking Holdings Empire Tiptoes Toward Quiet Collaboration –

Booking Holdings Empire Tiptoes Toward Quiet Collaboration – | eTourism Trends and News | Scoop.it
The multiple companies of Booking Holdings have run entirely independently of each other for years. But it’s not clear how long the status quo may remain the case.

Since becoming CEO of the group in 2017, Glenn Fogel has spoken about his vision for the conglomerate. Until now, Booking Holdings subsidiaries have typically driven most of their revenue from the sales of a single product, such as lodging or flights, to their customers. Fogel’s vision is for its consumer-facing brands to provide multiple services, cross-sells, and upsells to customers before, during, and after their trips.

Gastgewerbe fürchtet Mehrkosten der Digitalisierung

Gastgewerbe fürchtet Mehrkosten der Digitalisierung | eTourism Trends and News | Scoop.it

Online giants (OTA) grasp recovery momentum via marketing mix | PhocusWire | eTourism Trends and News | Scoop.it
As travel recovery continued in the summer, large online travel giants scrutinized their marketing investment to take advantage of, and drive, momentum in Q2 and beyond.

Booking Holdings, Expedia Group and Airbnb looked to what they already had in terms of their existing customer bases and continued to prudently put marketing dollars elsewhere, hopefully to bring in new travelers.

This led to a mix of careful performance marketing investment for Booking.com and Expedia, as well as some experimentation via new channels and campaigns.

Travel marketing under threat from Apple data changes | PhocusWire

Travel marketing under threat from Apple data changes | PhocusWire | eTourism Trends and News | Scoop.it
Location marketing has become a useful tool for travel brands to understand where their customers are and what their purchase intent might be.

Driven by the data-capture capabilities of a mobile device, which more often than not barely leave a consumer's side, companies and destination marketing organizations have found themselves with a treasure trove of information that allows them to offer the right message and the right time, based on the owner's location.

Fine-tuning such activity has only been inhibited by a brand's lack of understanding of the process or the technology behind the scenes.

But the Big Tech companies that gave organizations the opportunities to use these mechanisms are now rethinking the entire concept.

The lobby network: Big Tech's web of influence in the EU | Corporate Europe Observatory

The lobby network: Big Tech's web of influence in the EU | Corporate Europe Observatory | eTourism Trends and News | Scoop.it
In 'The Lobby Network', Corporate Europe Observatory and Lobbycontrol offer an overview of the tech industry's EU lobbying firepower. For the first time, we map the 'universe' of actors lobbying the EU’s digital economy, from Silicon Valley giants to Shenzhen’s contenders; from firms created online to those making the infrastructure that keeps the internet running; tech giants and newcomers.

We found a wide yet deeply imbalanced ‘universe’:

with 612 companies, groups and business associations lobbying the EU’s digital economy policies. Together, they spend over €97 million annually lobbying the EU institutions. This makes tech the biggest lobby sector in the EU by spending, ahead of pharma, fossil fuels, finance, and chemicals.

During a livestreamed event today, Google detailed the ways it’s using AI techniques — specifically a machine learning algorithm called multitask unified model (MUM) — to enhance web search experiences across different languages and devices. Beginning early next year, Google Lens, the company’s image recognition technology, will gain the ability to find objects like apparel based on photos and high-level descriptions. Around the same time, Google Search users will begin seeing an AI-curated list of things they should know about certain topics, like acrylic paint materials. They’ll also see suggestions to refine or broaden searches based on the topic in question, as well as related topics in videos discovered through Search.

UnFairbnb | Corporate Europe Observatory

UnFairbnb | Corporate Europe Observatory | eTourism Trends and News | Scoop.it
But in recent years, lobbyists have been working to counter this development. Corporate Europe Observatory’s new report “UnfairBnB” reveals the attempts of the companies behind the platforms to fight against European cities’ measures to protect affordable housing by lobbying the EU institutions and even filing official complaints against Berlin, Paris, Barcelona and Brussels.

Key findings of the report include:

- The European Commission is consistently working to interpret EU rules in favour of the tourist accommodation platforms.
- The Commission’s department for internal market and industry (DG GROW) is in regular contact with all main lobby groups for the sector, which are allowed to follow its every step.
- Significant concessions have already been made to AirBnB and its lobby association, the European Holiday Home Association, which has filed a complaint to the Commission against Berlin, Paris, Barcelona and Brussels that could end up in front of the European Court of Justice.
- The Commission’s own report on platforms like AirBnB features a significant commercial element, calling into question the platforms’ claim to a grassroots image.
- Within two years, the EU lobby spending of AirBnB has increased from less than €100,000 to just under €500,000. (2015-2016, latest available figures). The lobbying expenditure of other similar companies, such as Expedia, owner of HomeAway, follow the same pattern.
