Very few companies in the tech space have achieved the same level of success and power as Google has. The company, launched by Larry Page and Sergey Brin in 1998, had its humble beginnings in the duo's Stanford hostel room and became a $27 billion titan within six years.  Within no time, Google became the undisputed champion of Silicon Valley. The tech giant took on popular search engines of its time while sweeping aside all other competitors in its path. For a while, it seemed like Google could actually do no wrong. However, with Google's rapid growth, the company has

Digital free tourism – An exploratory study of tourist motivations - ScienceDirect

Digital free tourism – An exploratory study of tourist motivations - ScienceDirect | eTourism Trends and News | Scoop.it
The problem of technology overuse - and related mental health and addiction issues – has spilled over into the tourism context. Recent literature has also suggested that heavy use of technology while travelling could potentially have negative impacts on the overall tourist experience; and that tourists might search for “disconnection” while travelling. As a result, this study focuses on the recently emerged and scarcely understood phenomenon of “digital free tourism” (DFT), exploring participants' motivations for voluntarily abstaining from, or limiting their use of, technology on their travels. The findings aid relevant theory by identifying four main factors that motivate tourists to participate in DFT – escape, personal growth, health and well-being, relationships – and highlight several exploratory subthemes underlying these motivators.

The Rise of Data Regulation & The Impact on Hotel Marketing

The Rise of Data Regulation & The Impact on Hotel Marketing | eTourism Trends and News | Scoop.it
The rise of digital advertising grew from an era of limited tracking capabilities to an era of almost unlimited access to tracking user data across the web. This advancement in tracking has provided amazing opportunities to enhance campaign targeting options, narrowing targets based on user behavior and tying that tracking back to direct online booked revenue. This wild west atmosphere of digital tracking reached an apex that finally had governments and citizens around the world taking notice and growing concerned. Concepts around privacy and data took hold with the general public and political scandals, such as the ones documented in Netflix's The Great Hack. This drew attention to the need for the government to step in and help protect citizens from how their data was tracked, used and sold across the web.

It’s hard for major travel brands to ignore super apps given the huge volume of consumers that they attract and their high-frequency usage.

Tencent-owned WeChat has been adding 20 million active accounts every quarter since the middle of 2011, for example, according to Statista.

At last count, in the second quarter of 2019, WeChat had more than 1.15 billion monthly active users.

But, therein lies a specific set of challenges for brands: Millions are using these apps, which also include Grab and LINE, on a daily basis, and the apps have become powerful brands in their own right.

6 Ways for Hotels to Build Long-Term Email Relationships with Travelers

6 Ways for Hotels to Build Long-Term Email Relationships with Travelers | eTourism Trends and News | Scoop.it
You probably didn’t post to TikTok today, but how many times have you checked your email?

In digital marketing, despite an unending stream of hip new digital channels, technologies and communication platforms, it’s good-old-fashioned email communication that enjoys mass adoption, boasts superior ROI, and offers the powerful versatility of targeting, segmentation and personalization.

While the modern booking process often ably captures a hotel guest’s email address, it’s not a given. Online travel agencies (OTAs) and other third-party booking platforms, weary of competition, sometimes deny hotel teams such contact info.

OTAs and Metasearch Dominate Google’s Hotel-Related Keywords – Adweek | eTourism Trends and News | Scoop.it
Even though hotel brands have gone all in on direct booking campaigns, online travel sites like Booking.com and Hotels.com continue to dominate paid search advertising, according to media research firm Kantar.

Between Jan. 1 and Feb. 11, Kantar analyzed over 1,600 lodging-related Google search keywords like “las vegas hotels” and “nyc hotels” across desktop and mobile. Of the searched keywords, more than 75% of all ad clicks belonged to online travel agencies (OTAs) and metasearch engines, sites that often operate as the middlemen between hotels with vacant rooms and consumers looking for a deal.
