The Mongol Derby, 1000km on horseback--at a gallop! Slideshow via the Telegraph | equine |

Last week. The Mongol Derby – one of the world's most gruelling events for horses or humans – saw the Irish jockey Donal Fahy coming in first place and Richard Killoran coming in second, having endured a journey of 1000km (620 miles) across the inhospitable steppes of Mongolia.

Richard Dunwoody, the former champion jockey, was the official photographer. Here are some of his impressive images of this tough, demanding event, opening with this image of a pre-start parade.

If you like Mongolia and horses, be sure to read the memoir The Horse Boy by Rupert Isaacson. Ask me about it!
