Social Networking: Google+ and the Long Game

Social Networking: Google+ and the Long Game | Enterprise Social Media | Scoop.it

"Sure, Google+ doesn't have anything close to the numbers Facebook boasts. But there's still plenty of value Google can wring from its social network and plenty of places in which it can grow, according to Google VP Vic Gundotra. Google+, he said, is a social layer that goes on top of everything else Google does, rather than an isolated destination."

I agree that Google is playing a deeper, longer-term game with Google+. This report of a chat with the site's chief indicates a bit of the plan, but I expect there's more to it.

Regardless, I don't think Google's intent is to topple Facebook, but rather to counter Facebook's lead in social search.

This Inexpensive Marketing Plan Can Lead to More Traffic, More Leads and Higher Customer

This Inexpensive Marketing Plan Can Lead to More Traffic, More Leads and Higher Customer | Enterprise Social Media | Scoop.it

Are you up against competition that has deep pockets and can outspend you using traditional advertising methods?

Does it seem like a losing battle to go head-to-head with them to get new prospects?

Particularly for startup companies, using traditional advertising and marketing methods can get expensive…especially if you’re up against an established company with more money than you.

This is why you need to use marketing channels that will bring you the attention and customers you need without breaking your bank. Fortunately you have an entire group of channels that you can use…

Thanks to inbound marketing.

Twitter passes 200 million monthly active users; no longer a fad

Twitter passes 200 million monthly active users; no longer a fad | Enterprise Social Media | Scoop.it

Twitter has become a human seismograph where news no longer breaks it tweets. We learned to speak in 140 characters or less. We’ve witnessed Tweets erupt into revolutions. Hashtags are now a way of life. And, we now live in a world where if it wasn’t tweeted, it didn’t happen. Life unfolds in a digital river where experiences and common interests are the ties that bind us. Twitter is indeed part of the fabric of how our world communicates and connects and it contributes to the evolution of our #digitallifestyle.

Mike Ellsworth's insight:

I just love the quote, "if it wasn't tweeted, it didn't happen" mainly because of two sayings I originated in the 70s and 80s. First came "If it's not electric, it doesn't work." Almost 40 years later, this one still has legs. The second saying was "If it's not on video, it didn't happen." Almost 30 years after the personal video revolution, this is truer than ever.

So I really wish I would have come up with Solis' aphorism!

But enough about me. As usual, Solis nails the subject: the growing importance of Twitter, which many still write off as vapid and inconsequential. Twitter and Nielsen (my old employer) have recently announced a new ratings system based on tweets. And the Nieman Lab saysTwitter is becoming a broadcast network for late adopters.

When I train on social media, I tell my skeptical audience that refusing to use Twitter because people say stupid things on it is like refusing to use the telephone because people say stupid things on it.
