A full set of materials for an EA training-course, building on the whole-of-enterprise approach. (Whole-of-enterprise, that is, in contrast to the arbitrarily-constrained IT-is-the-centre-of-everything approach that most of the market vendors still seems to promote…)

Emeric Nectoux's insight:

Finally, a full covering Enterprise architecture training!
You even have 3 different setup, that you can use towards your different audiences from Top management up to technical specialists.

Eager to have it distributed through my company... Thank you Tom, you made my day! :D

How to Think Like an Enterprise Architect? ~ Future of CIO

How to Think Like an Enterprise Architect? ~ Future of CIO | Enterprise Architecture | Scoop.it
Enterprise Architecture is the discipline not just for Enterprise Architects, it's the thinking process every business leader should master; and it's the discipline every mature organization needs to practice.
Emeric Nectoux's insight:

Enterprise Architecture is the discipline not just for Enterprise Architects, it's the thinking process every business leader should master; and it's the discipline every mature organization needs to practice.

Not everyone should be an EA, neither everyone wants to be an EA,  but everyone can learn how to think like architect through: systematic thinking, system thinkingholistic thinking, critical thinking, creative thinking, analytics thinking, synthetic thinking, non-linear thinking, abstract thinking, design thinking, whole-brain thinking, positive thinking, etc...

Lean Is A Product-Driven Strategy

Lean Is A Product-Driven Strategy | Enterprise Architecture | Scoop.it
What is at the core of lean? Michael Balle argues, in terms of our best known example: "Toyota is not an efficiency-driven company. It’s a product-driven company."
Emeric Nectoux's insight:

A product is an object, material or digital, that allows its owner to solve a problem autonomously. product helps me to do something without help. There are always limits to that of course, as a product will need consumables, service and maybe even training to use it more efficiently. But the ideal product is one that I use effortlessly, grasping intuitively how it works without needing to talk to anyone else to make it work or maintain it. I’m autonomous.

A pioneering scientist explains ‘deep learning’

A pioneering scientist explains ‘deep learning’ | Enterprise Architecture | Scoop.it
AI goes back to 1956 in the United States, where engineers decided they would write a computer program that would try to imitate intelligence. Within AI, a new field grew up called machine learning. Instead of writing a step-by-step program to do something — which is a traditional approach in AI — you collect lots of data about something that you’re trying to understand. For example, envision you’re trying to recognize objects, so you collect lots of images of them. Then, with machine learning, it’s an automated process that dissects out various features, and figures out that one thing is an automobile and the other is a stapler.

Machine learning is a very large field and goes way back. Originally, people were calling it “pattern recognition,” but the algorithms became much broader and much more sophisticated mathematically. Within machine learning are neural networks inspired by the brain, and then deep learning. Deep learning algorithms have a particular architecture with many layers that flow through the network. So basically, deep learning is one part of machine learning and machine learning is one part of AI.

Is shadow IT something CIOs should worry about?

Is shadow IT something CIOs should worry about? | Enterprise Architecture | Scoop.it
Here's the CIO perspective on shadow IT and how their peers have responded to the advent of shadow IT within their organizations.
Emeric Nectoux's insight:

Way too often, shadow IT is pinpointed as "the evil". It is a syndrome of unfulfilled needs (IT not being able to fully address business's needs), but sometimes it is also the expression of everybody's innovation and as such should not be rejected massively.

CIOs clearly have a major role in determining whether shadow IT becomes an opportunity for improve IT and business relationship. Regardless of how a business capability is initiated, IT needs to ensure business capabilities function appropriately within the enterprise architecture and in accordance with business standards.

CIOs clearly need to be constructive about IT initiatives created elsewhere in the organization to succeed.

Getting Started with Governance and Compliance for AWS – BMC Blogs

Getting Started with Governance and Compliance for AWS – BMC Blogs | Enterprise Architecture | Scoop.it

As organizations accelerate innovation in the cloud, security and compliance become increasingly complex. Among its many benefits, the Amazon Web Services (AWS) ecosystem offers end users assuredness that governance principles are being upheld and risks associated with operating on the cloud are minimized.

Emeric Nectoux's insight:

One way that Cloud accelerates application deployment is by offering end users a managed services approach to governance through automation.

But before automation can be a real option for enterprise organizations they must accomplish some baseline feats of understanding. This includes being aware of compliance needs and adapting to governance standards, setting up a basic framework with stakeholders and knowledge together with the Cloud Service Provider.

This article examines how AWS includes governance and compliance provisions to its multi-functional cloud platform for enterprise businesses.

How Spotify Balances Employee Autonomy and Accountability

How Spotify Balances Employee Autonomy and Accountability | Enterprise Architecture | Scoop.it
The whole company is organized around it.
Emeric Nectoux's insight:

Autonomy may be the single most important element for creating engagement in a company. How can anyone feel engaged, let alone inspired, if she feels that some supervisor is always looking over her shoulder? But autonomy is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it spurs creativity and involvement. On the other, unchecked autonomy can lead to ambiguity and inefficiencies, even organizational chaos. To find the right balance, you have to wrestle with three challenges:

  1. Balancing autonomy and accountability

  2. Balancing freedom to innovate versus following proven routines

  3. Balancing alignment with control

The Future of Database Management Systems Is Cloud

The Future of Database Management Systems Is Cloud | Enterprise Architecture | Scoop.it
On Friday, 20-June-2019, Gartner published new research titled “The Future of the DBMS Market Is Cloud” by Donald Feinberg, Merv Adrian and Adam Ronthal. The thesis: cloud is now the default platform for managing data.
Emeric Nectoux's insight:
  1. More and more end-user organizations are deploying systems and applications to the cloud, including replacing on-premises systems with SaaS. IT may or may not be driving these shifts.
  2. Organizations who want to take advantage of new innovation in DBMS are moving to the cloud. It is happening only there, or at the least, in the cloud first. However, there is an increasing amount of innovation that will never get to on-premises, even when the vendor has on-premises products.
  3. New pricing models, avoidance of capital expense in favor of operating expense, and leveraging a pay-as-you-go approach, seem to be driving the move to the cloud.

What's really holding back today's CIO from digital transformation?

What's really holding back today's CIO from digital transformation? | Enterprise Architecture | Scoop.it
A new generation of IT leader has been arriving on the scene, more in-tune with the business, more collaborative, and with better soft skills, but a legacy tangle of tech stands in the way of moving towards the future.
Emeric Nectoux's insight:

HOW CIOS CAN OVERCOME KEY BARRIERS TO DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION

While there is no silver bullet (there rarely is in the technology world), there are some clear steps that IT and business leaders can take to get a handle on and address these challenges:

  • Institute a process to begin measuring technical debt. Although a fraught topic with low maturity across the industry, not starting is a good way to never resolve the issue. It's a touchy topic, but necessary in most organizations to embark on meaningful digital transformation.
  • Have a frank discussion about overall IT spending using benchmarking as a discussion. Do you want to be the Amazon, Netflix, or Airbnb of your industry? You'll likely need to invest a lot more than you are today and it will have medium-term impacts to the bottom line, as you're competing with companies who understand this. It's a board level discussion. And don't forget to include line-of-business spending and Shadow IT in the conversation.
  • Experiment prolifically in digital and provide air cover to those that don't succeed.Considerable research now shows that the risk takers are the ones that win in digital. Enlist change agents, but very importantly, protect them if they are not successful at first. No one will come after them if failures are not looked at as key and necessary lessons in digital. Spread those lessons as they are learned across the organization.
