The Circular Shift to a Sustainable Economy | REVOLVE

The Circular Shift to a Sustainable Economy | REVOLVE | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it

A circular economy turns waste into opportunity, building a sustainable future through innovation, conscious choices, and women’s leadership.
When purchasing a decorative object, article of clothing, or beauty product, how often do you consider the origin of its composite materials and where they will end up? This question has become increasingly urgent as climate challenges such as air pollution, water contamination, and soil degradation put immense pressure on global ecosystems. Long-standing linear economic models, which extract, use, and discard resources, have pushed planetary boundaries beyond sustainable limits. The consequences are clear: escalating heatwaves, severe water scarcity, and prolonged droughts threaten ecosystems and human livelihoods.

From superblocks to port electrification plans, Barcelona’s traffic pollution is slowly improving.
Reducing traffic in Barcelona by 25 per cent would prevent 200 premature deaths a year, according to a new study.
The Spanish city has the highest density of cars in the EU at almost 6,000 vehicles per square kilometre. Cutting down on combustion engines is no mean feat, but new research from the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) shows the life-saving difference it would make.

This seminar with professor Klaus Eisenack from Humboldt University will explore the key factors for cities to realise their full potential in combating climate change.
National governments often struggle with climate change, but cities are increasingly stepping up, creating hope that they can lead meaningful action. Storms and flooding across Europe last year affected a total of 413,000 people, led to the loss of at least 335 lives and are estimated to have cost at least €18 billion in damages.
Last year was the hottest year on record for Europe, with record-high annual temperatures in almost half of the continent.
The latest European State of the Climate report from the EU’s Copernicus service (C3S) shows that 45 per cent of days were much warmer than average, and 12 per cent were the warmest on record.

How to solve Europe's vacancy problem — | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it
While major cities face severe housing shortages, Europe also has a vacant property problem. In 2011, an estimated 38 million homes stood empty across the continent. While there are no more up-to-date numbers, it's likely to be still true: OECD data from 2021 revealed that over 10% of homes in Hungary, Cyprus, Slovenia, and Finland are vacant. As of May 2022, two million apartments in Germany were empty. This is especially the case in rural areas, like in Italy and Spain, where entire villages are deserted as people move from the countryside to larger urban areas.

A new study on Sweden’s largest sustainable urban development project finds that individual Nature-based solutions (NbS) have minimal impact on local climate, emphasizing the need for large-scale, interconnected green infrastructure for substantial cooling.
The research, carried out in Stockholm Royal Seaport, utilized a network of wireless sensor stations to monitor real-time temperature variations across different types of NbS: forest parks, green courtyards, rain gardens, green roofs, and lawns.
