The Riga City Council has tested out a pilot project using the videogame Minecraft to engage young people and students in the field of local urban planning. The use of the game makes the complex disci..
Climate activism has become increasingly synonymous with rebellion. International groups like Zero Hour and Extinction Rebellion create images of huge crowds of people protesting and raising awareness about the climate crisis. Guerrilla gardening is the act of cultivating plants in a public place, usually in a spot that is not otherwise being cared for, often with the aim of improving the surroundings and protecting the environment. It has a range of benefits from improving biodiversity to helping to keep temperatures low.
The European Green Deal sets out Europe’s ambition to become the first climate-neutral continent by 2050. Given the different starting points of various regions to face the coming changes, the Just Transition Fund was created with the aim of alleviating the socio-economic impacts of the transition, so as to ensure that everyone in Europe benefits from it. In order for it to be successful, it is clear that young people have to be involved. In this context, the European Commission’s Directorate General for Regional and Urban Policy published a ‘Toolkit for Youth Participation in the Just Transition Fund’. It aims to encourage more ambitious, meaningful and numerous participation opportunities for youth in the regions targeted by the Just Transition Fund.
For a just transition to green energy, we must take the whole energy sector out of the market and into democratic public ownership.
The recovery plan from the COVID-19 crisis must be in line with climate commitments, ensure no-one is left behind in the green transition, and create space for the voice of youth, write young climate activists.
The European Commission's proposed climate legislation "is a surrender", Swedish teenage activist Greta Thunberg said in the European Parliament on Wednesday (4 March) and urged MEPs to do more.
The ‘climate spring’ arrived in the Czech Republic this year as young students, spurred on by the global school strike movement, abandoned their classrooms to protest the Czech government’s chronic inaction on climate. Josef Patočka situates this new wave of activism in a tradition of ecological mobilisation in the country known for being in the ‘coal heartlands of Europe’. Now that the climate issue has broken into Czech public debate, what can be done to effectively push for structural change and a just transition to clean energy?
Today's announcement by Estonia to reach climate neutrality by 2050 rings hollow given the country's plans to keep burning shale oil.
After the last great school strike in May, they asked adults to take part next time. The date is Sept. 20, and the location is absolutely everywhere.
Jamie Margolin and Ann Pettifor share their motivations for fighting climate chaos
On Friday 20 September, thousands of children will once again take to the streets in the name of the planet – and this time they call for adults to strike with them. Philosopher Joëlle Zask considers how the conscience and clarity of the young climate protestors upturns notions of minority and majority in political society. She argues that in the face of the irresponsibility of the adults around them – from passive consumers to unscrupulous industrialists and unresponsive governments – children are the guardians of humanity’s future.
Let's face it, when it comes to the environment, there isn't much to rejoice about. So to spare you a long summer of eco-anxiety, we looked for some glimmers of hope. Here are five reasons to be optimistic.
It’s the week after the week before in which many parts of central Bristol were brought to a standstill by Extinction Rebellion. Views on the cause, action and tactics varied. I wanted to share some reflections. But I do this making clear that it is possible to question and challenge a group about its approach…

Octavia Butler wrote this as an epigram for the never-published third book of her Parable Series: Parable of the Trickster. She did not live long enough to finish this work, but her words echo on. While she’s been considered a literary giant for decades, her work has recently seen a resurgence and many of her books are being adapted for the screen by some of the industry’s biggest stars.
In recent years, climate has become a central topic in German politics. Whereas during the last federal elections in 2017 it was mainly the Green party calling for ambitious climate policies, now parties across the spectrum are putting the topic at the heart of their election programmes. In contrast to four years ago, the Greens are, for the first time, leading the polls, signalling that climate is a priority for many German voters. In a case started by climate activists, Germany’s highest court recently ruled that the government’s climate legislation falls short, a landmark decision that increased the momentum for more climate efforts. Only two weeks after the verdict, Merkel's cabinet pulled forward the climate neutrality target by five years to 2045. Now that climate protection has become mainstream, the question is not whether the country should transition to a clean energy economy, but how it should do so.
As the entire globe is in the middle of an unprecedented pandemic, with great economic, social, and environmental consequences, it is worth recalling mass mobilisations like Extinction Rebellion and Fridays For Future which took the global scene in spring 2019. A year on, it is time to examine their claims and impact on public awareness of the climate emergency as well as current political discourse and policymaking. Paolo Cossarini spoke with three scholars from different European countries who highlight fundamental themes these movements helped bring to the fore. What emerges is a nuanced theoretical and practical debate about citizens’ mobilisation, green transition, and the prospects of climate action.
In Europe, as across the world, youth mobilisations have shaken up the political landscape. But many countries in eastern and southern Europe saw smaller and fewer mobilisations, unable to unmoor political debates from traditional issues.
The 2050 targets are closer than you think. The impacts of today’s decisions will directly affect the young people already in the workforce. Monika Skadborg, chairperson of the Danish Youth Climate Council, argues it is time those voices should be heard in the climate debate
Inside the climate movement, journalist Rosalie Salaün talks to young climate activists to understand what is driving them and where their politics are going.
Local action is often the best remedy for the failings of the current system — a worldwide confederation of democratic communities can have the same impact at a global scale.
Have you ever come across the idea of ‘hysterical strength’ – the extraordinary power that affords people ‘superhuman’ strength at times of extreme danger? We’ve all heard stories of people suddenly being able to lift cars and trees off squashed people, throw people out of danger or run for our lives – literally. These stories... Find out more
Citizen activism is working to force change that is beneficial for all, in the face of the need to ditch greenhouse gas emitting fossil fuels
A region of northern England plans to become the first place in the world to have a UN-accredited climate change teacher in every state primary and secondary school.
