Tirintica has been working in the coal sector since 2014 in Romania’s Jiu Valley region — once a coal economic powerhouse. He was one of 10 miners invited to see how his skills could be adapted to match the needs of the renewable energy industry or those of the energy distribution sector. It’s the test phase of a pilot project spearheaded by the Romanian Wind Energy Association (RWEA).
The association’s goal is to get EU funds and strike a deal with an existing renewable energy skills academy located by Romania’s Black Sea coast that could retrain about 100 miners as part of an extended pilot project. The long-term goal is a 10-year project to reskill 800 miners per year. For now, private companies will finance the handful of miners involved in the early trial.

Spain has auctioned a total of 3 GW of renewable energy capacity under the country’s new auction design, the Contracts-for-Difference (CfD) model, resulting in the lowest ever price for new onshore wind energy in Europe, of EUR 20 per MWh, according to WindEurope.

The CfD model brings the lowest prices for renewables because it minimizes the financing costs of new projects. CfDs are cheap for governments, as governments get paid back as well as paying out. In this way, citizens win twice, both as consumers and taxpayers, according to WindEurope CEO Giles Dickson.

Three wind farms are to be constructed in northern Poland, thanks to a credit agreement between PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna and the European Investment Bank (EIB). The construction of Starza, Rybice and Karnice II (combined into the Klaster project) will be financed with PLN 272.5m (approx. EUR 64m), announced the EU bank in a press release. The Klaster project on the Baltic coast will have a total capacity of up to 97 MW. It meets the commitment by PGE to “invest in renewable sources of energy that will help to decarbonise the energy sector in Poland”.

The largest power-to-heat plant to date in Germany officially entered service on 29 November 2018, but as early as September, the new plant supplied its first megawatt-hour of heat to the district heating network in Hamburg. The plant is intended to generate heat during peak-load periods and, in future, convert wind energy into heat to be used for heating purposes.
