Amsterdam Deal With Tropical Forest Aims to Make Sustainable City - Bloomberg | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it
Amsterdam’s partnership with a tropical forest for everything from park benches to construction projects offers a new model for urban development.

The city of Amsterdam uses a lot of wood—for public-housing construction, bridge repair, street furniture and more. But it’s tough to be sure the lumber doesn’t come from fragile ecosystems. Last summer, Amsterdam started working with the stewards of a sustainably managed forest in Suriname to buy traceable hardwoods for use in projects across the city.

A Tiny Twist on Street Design: The One-Minute City - Bloomberg

A Tiny Twist on Street Design: The One-Minute City - Bloomberg | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it
Sweden is pursuing a hyperlocal variation, on a national scale. A plan piloted by Swedish national innovation body Vinnova and design think tank ArkDes focuses attention on what Dan Hill, Vinnova’s director of strategic design, calls the “one-minute city.” It’s a order of magnitude smaller than other recent think-local planning conceits. While Paris works with a 15-minute radius and Barcelona’s superblocks with nine-block chunks of the city, Sweden’s project operates at the single street level, paying attention to “the space outside your front door — and that of your neighbors adjacent and opposite,” Hill says.

Enquête auprès de parents à Paris et à Milan » | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it

Urban planning - a must have for future cities

Most modern cities depend on quality urban planning to direct their growth and development, and to best cope with the challenges they face. Lack of urban planning usually leads to wild, unplanned sprawl which creates a host of problems, ranging from lack of infrastructure to high vulnerability to any kind of disruption. Good urban planning can help cities become greener, more resilient, more efficient, healthier, and a nicer place to live with rich cultural offerings and stronger community core.
