A New Social Contract for People and the Planet | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it
Today our societies seem more unequal than ever before. Yet European Institutions and most policy-makers seem reluctant to discuss the problem, proposing only minor legislative tweaks rather than bold policies to provide real solutions. In this interview Green MEP Sara Matthieu and trade unionist Philippe Pochet discuss why a fair system that tackles social inequalities and prioritises people’s wellbeing and quality of life will be crucial in the fight against climate change.

Taking action against climate change: developing a long-term vision to inform urgent and necessary decisions

Taking action against climate change: developing a long-term vision to inform urgent and necessary decisions | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it
The climate emergency, which has been unequivocally proven by scientists, is starting to be an important part of public debates and political and economic decisions. To decarbonize the economy, states and businesses alike must have a clear vision of the long-term trajectory of their territory or sector, and of the necessary changes involved, a vision that must be constructed via a dialogue within society. A long-term outlook serves as a guide for the measures and actions that are required in the short term. The global research network Deep Decarbonization Pathways, coordinated by IDDRI, is publishing a scientific article in Nature Climate Change that proposes a methodology for these actors to adopt.

Social pillar will define next decade of European policy, EU official says

Social pillar will define next decade of European policy, EU official says | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it

The action plan for a European Pillar of Social Rights will mark the next decade of European policies, European Commission advisor on social rights José António Vieira da Silva has said.
Speaking to EURACTIV’s partner Lusa, Vieira da Silva explained that the action plan the European Commission presented on Thursday details the instruments to realise the principles that guide the EU bloc’s social policy, approved by EU leaders at the 2017 Social Summit in Sweden.

The European Commission held an extensive public consultation, in which it received “hundreds or thousands of contributions”, in addition to debates among countries and in the European Parliament.

The EU executive also took into account a Eurobarometer survey on the problems identified by European citizens and which “confirms the high priority people give to the social dimension”.
