This open-source toolbox allows placemakers to work on projects and achieve their goals to make better places regardless of their background or previous experience. This is a “one stop page” to find the right resource to apply to your project or context. Additionally, as these manuals are invented and developed by those intimately attached to the projects that the tool has been applied to, we can gain deep insights into the contextual application, applaud these placemakers’ tool contributions to the network, and even have the ability to reach out and ask advice for how to apply the tool in different contexts. From this collection of resources, placemaking work is able to be locally relevant, while globally competitive with international and multidisciplinary inputs to support a robust process and strategy, and therefore, a successful and enduring place users want to keep coming back to.
Paris is the latest global city to roll out emergency bike lanes for the use of key workers and others during the lockdown. 650 kilometers of cycleways—including a number of pop-up “corona cycleways”—will be readied for May 11 when lockdown is eased in France. Before the Coronavirus crisis, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo had promised that every street in the city would become cycle-friendly by 2024, but fears of gridlock caused by increased car traffic once the lockdown is eased are allowing officials to accelerate Hidalgo’s existing “Plan Vélo” transport changes.

The city has published its 10-year plan for the greening of the city, prioritising pedestrians, residents and other street users over cars. The superblock scheme groups together nine city blocks and closes them to through traffic with plant pots and benches, introduces cycle lanes, play areas and green spaces, and eliminates most parking spaces. While cars aren’t banned, the superblocks are car-unfriendly.
