On 1 November, the Greek capital revealed that it will soon implement the largest energy upgrade programme the country has ever planned. That is, the City of Athens will replace its current “traditional” lighting fixtures with a total of 43,679 new and modern lamps that will enhance the security of citizens, reduce costs, and benefit the environment.

The City of Strasbourg has received the “1-star label” awarded by the National Association for the Protection of the Sky and the Night Environment (ANPCEN) for its work against light pollution.

This national label aims to promote the actions carried out by local authorities to preserve the night environment and the quality of the night. It rewards a cooperation of several years between the City of Strasbourg and the ANPCEN. The towns of Schiltigheim and Vendenheim were also awarded with respectively “1 star” and “3 stars” for the 2019-2020 edition.

Local authorities in Bulgaria are renewing street lighting systems in projects worth almost EUR 9.2 million in total, of which just one tenth is own contribution while 8.3 million was secured through EEA Grants.

Under a program called Renewable Energy, Energy Efficiency, Energy Security, funded by the EEA Grants segment of the European Economic Area Financial Mechanism 2014-2020, twenty best-ranked Bulgarian municipalities will receive between EUR 200,000 and EUR 600,000 each to replace street lighting with smart and energy efficient systems.

Bulgaria is preparing to launch its Renewable Energy, Energy Efficiency and Energy Security Program, with an estimated EUR 33 million budget to finance street lighting, geothermal and hydropower utilization, energy efficiency in buildings, and other projects, the Ministry of Energy has said on its website.
