“Four Meals From Anarchy” – We Must Grow More Food Locally

“Four Meals From Anarchy” – We Must Grow More Food Locally | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it
The UK’s food policy substantially presumes that foreign countries will continue to send us shiploads of food, and currently over half of what is consumed here is imported. This is perilous indeed, especially at a time when many nations are adopting their own protectionist policies, restricting food exports so to feed their own people.

Can local food feed an urban world?

Once upon a time everybody ate local food. No one called it that back then, of course. People just hunted, gathered, tilled the soil, and grazed livestock—all, for the most part, relatively close to home. But then small agricultural settlements grew into towns, towns grew into cities, and eventually the city became a place where you moved to get away from farming.

Covering the flat roofs and roof terraces of Bologna, Italy, with soil-free gardens could supply 12,000 tons of vegetables per year, or 77% of what the city’s inhabitants consume

Rendre nos territoires plus résilients en relocalisant notre alimentation

Rendre nos territoires plus résilients en relocalisant notre alimentation | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it

From the covid-19 to a sustainable economy

When talking to people these days who are concerned about global warmingand sustainability as central challenges, I often encounter worried faces and gloomy forecasts: Once the COVID-19pandemic has been brought under control, they fear, politicians will again do everything in their power to stimulate resource-consuming economic growth in every conceivable way. Longer-termecological goals will once again be in danger of being undermined, just as they were following the financial crisis in 2008.

How London’s Trees Help Boost the Local Economy

How London’s Trees Help Boost the Local Economy | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it

London’s leafy streets and gardens have long been prized for their beauty — and more recently their ability to counteract carbon emissions and improve air quality. But the value of urban trees can also be measured with money. A new report from Britain’s Office of National Statistics estimates tree cover saved the capital more than 5 billion pounds ($6.56 billion) from 2014 to 2018 through air cooling alone. Additionally, by keeping summer temperatures bearable for workers, trees prevented productivity losses of almost 11 billion pounds.

It’s a popular idea that the path to sustainability lies in high-tech solutions. By making everyday items like cars electric, and installing smart systems to monitor and reduce energy use, it seems we’ll still be able to enjoy the comforts to which we’ve become accustomed while doing our bit for the planet – a state known as “green growth”.

La crise du COVID-19 a été un accélérateur de ce concept de résilience productive.

Local Control Clears the Path to a Clean Energy Future – Institute for Local Self-Reliance

Local Control Clears the Path to a Clean Energy Future – Institute for Local Self-Reliance | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it
In 2017, Pueblo became one of the first cities in Colorado to commit to powering itself entirely with renewable energy. The decision was driven in part by frustrations with sky-high energy costs: Almost one quarter of Pueblo’s population lives under the poverty line, but residents of the Front Range city still pay some of the highest electric rates in the region. Energy costs rose dramatically after the city’s electric utility, South Dakota-based Black Hills Energy, invested in a new fossil gas plant, passing the costs on to already cash-strapped Pueblo families.

Sustainable rooftop-fish-farming conquers Brussels city heights – EURACTIV.com

Sustainable rooftop-fish-farming conquers Brussels city heights – EURACTIV.com | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it

Covering an area of 4,000 square metres, Europe’s largest urban farm is located in the heart of Brussels, on the rooftops of the Foodmet, a food hall known as “the belly of Brussels”, which attracts more than 100,000 people every weekend.

“Having always had a vision of the city as a solution and not a problem, I’ve been investigating ways to make it productive,” said Beckers.

“As an architect, I also saw the potential of surrounding a building with a productive greenhouse whose plants regulate the climate and protect the occupants from extremes, while at the same time purifying the air of the CO2 it is burdened with,” Beckers added.
