Gas power plants overtook lignite in 2020 to become the EU’s single largest source of power sector emissions, according to fresh analysis from energy think tank Ember. The analysis, published on Friday (16 April), is based on data reported by energy companies covered by the EU’s emissions trading scheme, which puts a price on each tonne of CO2 emitted by more than 10,000 large industrial installations.
Large-scale geothermal energy has long been constrained to volcanic areas where heat can easily be captured and turned into electricity. Today, breakthroughs in drilling techniques are opening new horizons for the technology, offering the prospect of “geothermal anywhere”.
Studies estimate that the EU produces more waste heat than the demand of its entire building stock. The urgency to fight climate change calls for a radical transformation of the energy system in the coming decades. The deployment of renewables and waste heat used in district heating (DH) networks is part of the solution to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
Some time ago the City of Genk, in collaboration with the other partners involved, applied for a regulatory sandbox at Thor Park. "Today Minister Zuhal Demir announced the Thor Park to be the first regulatory sandbox in Flanders. We are particularly pleased since this means that new opportunities are opening up for cooperation on the energy system of the future, " explains Mayor Wim Dries. With their research, EnergyVille anticipates the changing energy system at Thor Park. Challenges are, for example, the mismatch between the less predictable production of sun and wind and the demand pattern of customers, changing consumption patterns of end users of technological innovations in the field of energy storage, smart charging of electric vehicles and smart control of heating and cooling. In addition to the theoretical part, experimental research activities are also essential.
The European Investment Bank (EIB) and the Hellenic Distribution Network Operator, part of the Public Power Corporation (PPC) have signed an agreement for a 20-year loan amounting to 255 million euros. The funding will be used to develop the capacities of the Greek electricity distribution network by modernizing and reinforcing the infrastructure supplying power both to the country’s islands and the mainland.
Zero-carbon hydrogen has been injected into a UK gas network for the first time in a groundbreaking trial that could help to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. The 20% hydrogen and natural gas blend is being used to heat 100 homes and 30 faculty buildings at Keele University in Staffordshire. Unlike natural gas, when hydrogen is burned it produces heat and water as opposed to carbon dioxide.
Building on its previous reports, investigating the status of the ESCO market in the EU, the Joint Research Centre (JRC) reviewed the efforts made by Member States to stimulate the market of energy services in the broad sense, focusing on the compliance with Article 18, and has collected and updated current knowledge on the ESCO markets, in particular the size of the national markets with their main characteristics during the period 2015-2018. The findings show new developments since the last report published by the JRC in 2017.
blockchain’s distinguishing features — immutable ledgers, decentralized architectures, and programmability through smart contracts — are compelling for an electricity system with much greater customer-side participation than ever before.
Based on a European project entitled “Community-based Virtual Power Plants’ (Interreg 2017–2010) this paper discusses opportunities for community energy projects—focusing on the example of community-based virtual power plants. Using a business model canvas as heuristic and the Dutch demonstration case as an example, we show how a business model following a community logic is unfeasible in practice. The current institutional context compels community based cVPP initiatives to partially abandon such community-based values, in order to be able to survive in the energy services market. It is concluded that more attention is needed for institutional change since the current institutional bias that hinders cVPP projects is also hindering a more inclusive energy transition.
Conditions and requirements for the technical feasibility of a power system with a high share of renewables in France towards 2050 - Analysis and key findings. A report by the International Energy Agency.
Now that the EU has raised its 2030 emissions reduction target from 40% to 55%, questions are being asked about how utility operators can make the changes necessary to transform the energy system.
For the European Union (EU) to be climate neutral by 2050, gas networks will have to be gradually adapted to carry green gases such as biomethane and hydrogen. 23 national regulatory authorities (NRAs) have looked into the current possibilities for admixing hydrogen and injecting biomethane or transporting pure hydrogen via existing gas networks, as well as network adaptations to allow this in the future and reported via a survey to the EU Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators (ACER). The results show that 65% of the responding NRAs reported that the transmission system operators (TSOs) do not accept the injection or allow hydrogen volumes into the gas transmission network yet.

This White paper briefly evaluates all major energy generation systems. It highlights how fit they are and what needs to be done to guarantee unlimited dispatchability and flexibility to the end-use sectors (households, industry, transport). Decarbonised thermal power generation can compensate any available limitations of on-demand renewable power generation (incl. hydro power and bio-mass, …), such that it will strongly contribute to support the transition towards a future carbon-neutral energy supply. Flexible thermal generation technologies for electricity and heat powered with “green” fuels generated by renewable sources will close the existing gap between power supplied by variable renewable energy sources (vRES) and the demand profiles from different end-use sectors smartly shaped by demand-site energy management (DSM) systems.
According to a new study by Finland’s LUT University, solar PV consumes between 2% and 15% of the water that coal and nuclear power plants use to produce just 1 MWh of output; for wind, this percentage ranges from 0.1% to 14%. Under the researchers’ best policy scenario, water consumption could be reduced by 75.1% by 2030, compared to 2015 levels.
For the EU, the incentive to transition to clean energy is not just ecological but also geopolitical. Daniel Scholten analyses the twists and turns that may lie ahead in Europe’s path to realise its goal of becoming a world leader in renewables. While EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s Green Deal may be a move in the right direction, a coherent blueprint with political backing will be essential if the EU is to forge a sustainable and coordinated energy security policy.
