Commission Européenne - COMMUNIQUES DE PRESSE - U.S. liquefied natural gas exports up by 272% as EU and U.S. host High-Level Business-to-Business Energy Forum

Today, top energy business executives from both sides of the Atlantic meet in Brussels to discuss further ways to enhance LNG trade, the role that competitively-priced U.S.-LNG can play on the EU market and the growing opportunities for using LNG in the transport sector. This High-Level Energy Forum, opened by EU Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy Miguel Arias Cañete and U.S. Secretary of Energy Rick Perry, gives American and European businesses the opportunity to chart further actions to fully harvest commercial opportunities in the LNG trade. These will range from new infrastructure for upstream development, liquefaction and re-gasification to pipeline network distribution as well as new business models and financial instruments in a changing market. It also provides U.S. and European decision-makers from companies in the LNG sector with match-making and deal-making opportunities.

The gathering, which is a clear signal of the strengthened of EU-U.S. cooperation in the field of energy, provided a further occasion for EU Commissioner Miguel Arias Cañete to meet with the U.S. Secretary of Energy Rick Perry and discuss broader aspects of EU-US energy relations.

Serbia : Investors alone have benefits from small hydropower plants – citizens, state and municipalities have none

Serbia : Investors alone have benefits from small hydropower plants – citizens, state and municipalities have none | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it
The authorities did not consider the possible environmental impact when they lightly issued construction permits for small hydropower plants (SHPPs) and approved incentives for privileged electricity producers. And then the adept investors saw the opportunity to make profits – they lobbied to adjust regulations and, coupled with poor inspection work on the ground, the situation is what it is today: a widespread devastation of small watercourses and the environment is taking place in Serbia, Ratko Ristić, Dean of the University of Belgrade Faculty of Forestry, tells Balkan Green Energy News.

Energy and oil majors turn to rural Africa in grab for world's next billion customers

Energy and oil majors turn to rural Africa in grab for world's next billion customers | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it
Armed with solar panels, lanterns and mini grids, European energy giants hope to capture the data of hundreds of millions of new, increasingly wealthy customers in rural Africa.

The first step is to set up tiny renewable generators independent of main power grids, often sold on pay-as-you-go schemes like mobile phones.

Once that basic energy supply is established – to charge phones, home lighting and other small appliances – it’s expected to fuel demand for a slew of new products and services, such as internet access, mobile banking, water pumps, mills, fridges, home batteries and cooking stoves. The reams of data on how these new customers use and pay for their energy will help companies decide their next moves.

Greece’s PPC unveils plan to boost share of renewables, expand to other markets

Greece’s PPC unveils plan to boost share of renewables, expand to other markets | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it
Greece’s majority state-owned power utility, Public Power Corporation (PPC), has developed its 2018-2022 strategic and business plan with the support of its advisor, envisaging the company’s expansion to foreign markets and boosting the share of renewables in its overall energy generation mix, among other matters, according to an announcement from PPC. The advisor is consulting firm McKinsey & Company, according to reports.

The document, designed to safeguard PPC’s resilience and transform it into “a modern and cutting edge utility,” calls for increasing the participation of renewable energy sources, mostly wind and solar, in the company’s generation mix by around 600 MW by 2022. It sets the target of a 20%-25% share of renewable energy sources in PPC’s total capacity by 2030-2035.

Accelerating the path towards ‘solar energy 3.0’

Accelerating the path towards ‘solar energy 3.0’ | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it
Europe is currently in the first stage of photovoltaic solar development. Moving to the next phases, 2.0 and 3.0, will require a smart new Green Deal that avoids the “boom-and-bust” developments of the past and leverages private investment to achieve high renewable energy goals, writes Stefan Degener.
