The opening should coincide with the start of the school year
Without any doubt, Paris is a frontrunner in the fight against climate change. For the city authorities, a pre-condition for a future-proof city is that its population should be aware of the issues stemming from the changing climate and that it has the means to face the ecological transition.
That is why the City Council of Paris adopted on Thursday a decision to launch a Climate Academy. Conceived with and for young people, this institution is tasked to prepare a generation of active citizens that live in a sustainable manner.

Getting to Net Zero: Why Education and Analytical Skills are Key to Reaching Europe’s Goals

Getting to Net Zero: Why Education and Analytical Skills are Key to Reaching Europe’s Goals | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it

By Sir Peter Gluckman, Director, Koi Tū: The Centre for Informed Futures, University of Auckland

"Citizens are not dumb; they know that things are inherently complex and that there is no free lunch, even though politicians often try to sell them the silver bullet. We need to teach in ways that reflect reality. How we do so may take time in developing the effective pedagogies. Problem based teaching is one methodology used especially in medicine, but there is much to learn from the emergence of futures studies and transdisciplinarity. Indeed, a greater focus on anticipatory framing may be a valuable tool in education.
Increasingly, young people want their education to feel relevant to them. Education needs in many places to shift its curriculum content to be more meaningful. While disciplinary knowledge is essential, the examples used can be much more relevant. For example, building mathematical models of some aspect of the climate challenge might be a far more useful way of teaching mathematics, science and other subjects than abstract calculus and physics."

Ecology Starts at School

School is a shared experience. Everybody goes to school and one way or another the experience shapes us. Yet despite education’s importance, the question of what we learn and how is often left in the background, while the deeper question of what is school actually for is overlooked entirely. In an interconnected world where the implications of climate breakdown and new digital technologies are reshaping how we live our lives, shouldn’t they reshape how we prepare for them too? This question is the point of departure for Dessine-moi un avenir (Draw me a Future), published in French by Actes Sud. We spoke to Edouard Gaudot, co-author alongside Rodrigo Arenas and Nathalie Laville, about the key challenges for education systems today and why schools should be at the centre of green politics.

The people wanted Lego bike lanes, and Lego is finally listening

The people wanted Lego bike lanes, and Lego is finally listening | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it

A thousand years ago, back in 2019, a regional councilor in the Netherlands named Marcel Steeman undertook a seemingly impossible challenge: convince the makers of one of the most popular toys in the world to do something a little different.
He wanted Lego, the toy production company based in Billund, Denmark, to add bike lanes to their tiny, brick-made cities.
