What Does An Ecological Civilization Look Like?

What Does An Ecological Civilization Look Like? | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it
These are all critically important issues. But here’s the rub: Even if the Democratic administration were resoundingly successful on all fronts, its initiatives would still be utterly insufficient to resolve the existential threat of climate breakdown and the devastation of our planet’s life-support systems. That’s because the multiple problems confronting us right now are symptoms of an even more profound problem: The underlying structure of a global economic and political system that is driving civilization toward a precipice.

Nature in Cities and Cities in Nature

Nature in Cities and Cities in Nature | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it
The good news is that there are solutions, many of which involve bringing nature (and food) resources back into the city: more parks, more trees, natural systems (“green infrastructure”) to reduce stormwater pollution, “green” roofs, and even urban farms, such as concentrated urban farming

Ecocide: Towards International Recognition

Ecocide: Towards International Recognition | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it
The fight to have ecocide recognised as a crime against humanity in both international and national law has spanned multiple decades. During this time, countless crimes against ecosystems and their inhabitants – human and animal – have been carried out with devastating effects. Now ecocide has finally made it onto the political agenda in Europe and around the world. But the battle to ensure that legislation means perpetrators will be brought to justice is far from won.

Fossil-Fuelled Fascism and the Lessons for the Greens | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it
Professor of human ecology Andreas Malm takes his reflections on fossil capitalism a step further to make a direct connection between the Green surge recently witnessed in some European countries and the electoral victories of far-right populist forces. For him, Greens must use this opportunity to push their fight for climate justice side-by-side with movements on the street.

The Art of Traveling Light: Tourism with a Positive Impact | Cooperative City

The Art of Traveling Light: Tourism with a Positive Impact | Cooperative City | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it
The extractive nature of mass tourism is made possible by tourist behaviour, missing regulations and lacking alternatives. There has been very little work done to make tourism more responsible, sustainable and enriching for local communities. While there is a growing number of emerging NGOs, cooperatives and social enterprises to channel tourism revenues into socially meaningful initiatives, they are often isolated and do not constitute a coherent tissue of services that could help tourists spend their budget in a thoroughly responsible way, with the most positive footprint possible. Our selection of interviews and articles aims at mapping and bringing together these initiatives, understanding their functioning, strengthening the ecosystem that feeds them and helping municipalities in adopting their tourism strategies to accommodate more responsible ways of traveling.

What Might an Ecosocialist Society Look Like?

What Might an Ecosocialist Society Look Like? | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it

Before describing possible features of a future ecosocialism, it is worthwhile to consider why such a system is even needed. Why can’t the problems that ecosocialism would solve also be remedied within the current global capitalist system? Part I of this essay addresses that question by summarizing recent scientific reports on the state of the climate and extent of the ecological crisis; reviewing available methods and technologies that could be used to address the climate and ecological crises; and briefly describing capitalism’s structural inability to provide solutions at the scale of the crises. Part II then takes up the subject of the title, ecosocialism, along with strategies to move in that direction.

Ecology Starts at School

School is a shared experience. Everybody goes to school and one way or another the experience shapes us. Yet despite education’s importance, the question of what we learn and how is often left in the background, while the deeper question of what is school actually for is overlooked entirely. In an interconnected world where the implications of climate breakdown and new digital technologies are reshaping how we live our lives, shouldn’t they reshape how we prepare for them too? This question is the point of departure for Dessine-moi un avenir (Draw me a Future), published in French by Actes Sud. We spoke to Edouard Gaudot, co-author alongside Rodrigo Arenas and Nathalie Laville, about the key challenges for education systems today and why schools should be at the centre of green politics.

Libérer l’écologie de l’imaginaire effondriste

Libérer l’écologie de l’imaginaire effondriste | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it

A World Alive: Green Politics in Europe and Beyond

A World Alive: Green Politics in Europe and Beyond | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it

This edition maps the different worlds of green politics today, exploring the movements and ideas driving its development. Zooming out, the edition asks what wider changes in politics and society mean for political ecology as it faces interlocking environmental and social crises in the 21st century.
As much as a way of understanding the world as a movement to change it, political ecology is on the rise. A reckoning with our society’s position in a wider ecological system is taking place. Faced with irrevocable damage that makes life everywhere more insecure, from Italy to Finland, people are organising for a change of course at the ballot box and through insurgent street protests. From concepts such as ecofeminism and the Green New Deal to questions of narrative and institutional change, this edition maps the forces, strategies, and ideas that will power political ecology, across Europe as around the world. The 2020s can be a decade of change for the better, or the worse.

Décrocher Macron : destituer le gouvernement, constituer l’État de demain | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it
