Sharon Dijksma: Without cities it will be impossible to tackle global warming | TheMayor.EU | Interview

The main message I brought was that cities should be included in global policymaking on climate and the upcoming climate summits. Without cities, it will be impossible to tackle global warming. Moreover, cities want to lead the way. They facilitate innovation and have the capacity to invest on a large scale in clean mobility, green construction and creating a sustainable energy supply.

This Dutch city has transformed its bus stops into bee stops

This Dutch city has transformed its bus stops into bee stops | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it

In the Dutch city Utrecht 316 bus stops now have a green roof. They do not only look great, they also help capture fine dust, storage of rainwater and provide cooling in the summertime.

It is one of many measures aimed at a.o. improving Utrecht's air quality.

Better buses

Recently Utrecht has replaced 10 diesel buses for electric busesUtrecht aims to only operate co2 neutral buses by 2028. In the meantime, Utrecht incentivises bus drivers to adapt to a more environmentally friendly driving style. The buses register how efficient and comfortable each bus driver operates the bus, and based on how well they drive, they can "win" prizes the cleaner, more comfortable and safer they drive.

Utrecht rooftops to be ‘greened’ with plants and mosses in new plan | Netherlands | The Guardian

Utrecht rooftops to be ‘greened’ with plants and mosses in new plan | Netherlands | The Guardian | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it

Every roof in the city district of Utrecht is to be “greened” with plants and mosses or have solar panels installed under plans driven by the success of a similar scheme for the municipality’s bus stops.
The “no roofs unused” policy is part of an attempt to reinvigorate biodiversity in the city and create a less stressful and happier environment, of which the construction of a so-called “vertical forest tower with 10,000 plants on its facade is set to become a leading example.
That building alone, close to Utrecht railway station, will host 360 trees and 9,640 shrubs and flowers, equal to 1 hectare (2.47 acres) of woods, once it is completed in 2022.

The 24-hectare site, located between two canals in the middle of the city, is a business park but by 2024 it is hoped the area will enhance Utrecht’s reputation as a bicycling capital of Europe.
