Five EU countries including the UK, Germany, Greece, Poland, and Slovenia are looking to introduce new fossil fuel subsidies by 2030, an analysis of the 28 Member States’ draft energy and climate plans (NECPs) has revealed.

In a new report, “Fossil fuel subsidies in draft EU National Energy and Climate Plans: Shortcomings and final call for action,” experts from the Overseas Development Institute (ODI), Friends of the Earth (FoE) Netherlands, and Climate Action Network (CAN) Europe have analyzed the EU Member States’ draft NECPs, which require governments to report on their fossil fuel subsidies and plans to phase them out, the CAN has said in a press release.

Since its establishment in 2007, Municipality Šentrupert has been actively investing in the energy supply. During the international congress forum “Yes, we can! Regions in Germany, Europe and the world show 100% RE is reality today”, Šentrupert was the first Slovenian municipality to be awarded the European 100 %RES Communities label on the 11th of November 2014.

Slovenia plans to set up a European circular economy center this year, as part of the global Platform for Accelerating the Circular Economy (PACE), Slovenian Prime Minister Miro Cerar announced recently in Davos, according to STA Agency.

Slovenia has defined a circular economy as one of the 12 objectives of its 2030 development strategy. It will serve as the framework that will help the state achieve the sustainable development objectives of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The Platform for Accelerating the Circular Economy was launched in 2017 as a public-private collaboration with a goal to enable greater cooperation among these two sectors’ organizations in order to close the production-consumption loop and to contribute to achieving 12 sustainable development goals by developing solutions for e-waste, plastic pollution and other sustainable consumption and production challenges.

Heads of municipalities in Slovenia’s coal regions – Savinjsko-Šaleška, and Zasavje decided to establish a council of mayors to monitor the phaseout of coal and secure just transition. Slovenian blockchain-powered energy trading platform SunContract has recently entered into a strategic partnership with Italian energy company Tecnoapp.

Under a cooperation agreement signed by SunContract and Tecnoapp, the parties are to work on the market expansion of SunContract Energy Marketplace and decentralization of the energy market in Italy.

SunContract is an energy trading platform that directly connects energy producers and consumers into an energy pool based on smart contracts, according to the platform’s website. Through the platform, Slovenian households are currently witnessing electricity cost reductions of up to 40% while also choosing environmentally friendly energy sources, SunContract says.

Several years ago, Ljubljana created an energy plan to make the city more sustainable and efficient. The Slovenian capital wanted to renovate its landmark castle, insulate public buildings and modernize schools, libraries and theatres. The plan would cut waste and heating bills and improve air quality.

“There was a big need for improvements in the city,” says Alenka Loose, the energy manager for Ljubljana.
