Slovakia Low Carbon Economy Pathways

Slovakia Low Carbon Economy Pathways | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it

This report combines macro and micro level analyses to provide an updated picture of Slovakia’s energy and CO2 emissions profile with outlook and predictions to 2030. It is based on modelled outcomes from the Institute for Environmental Policy (IEP), which was developed in partnership with the World Bank for the publication of ‘A Low-Carbon Growth Study for Slovakia’1 that will be updated to reflect the latest EU climate and energy policies in 2021. The main quantitative contributions of this work relate to large industrial emitters in Slovakia: (i) an aggre-gated company-level GHG reductions prediction and (ii) company-level decarbonization trends and projections based on publicly available Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) data. The buildings and industrial (sub) sectors pre-sent the highest potential for Slovakia to meet ambitious 2030 climate commitments and take ownership of 2050 carbon neutrality, and therefore are at the core of this narrative.

How grassroots democracy can cure the ills of central Europe | European Council on Foreign Relations

How grassroots democracy can cure the ills of central Europe | European Council on Foreign Relations | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it

Cities worldwide are rising to the common challenges of climate change and environmental degradation, growing inequality and intolerance, and rising housing costs. They increasingly do so in collaboration with one another, pooling resources and exchanging ideas on what works. They rise above partisanship, focusing on ways to provide solutions to their residents.
Our cities are the engines of growth and innovation in the region. As we face many common challenges, we have decided to tackle them together. To this end, we are proud to establish the “Pact of Free Cities” – which is formally launching at the Central European University in Budapest on 16 December.

Slovak court defends citizens’ right to clean air in Bratislava

Slovak court defends citizens’ right to clean air in Bratislava | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it
Residents in Slovakia’s capital have won their court battle for clean air after a court ruled that the city’s Air Quality Plan breaches both Slovak and European laws.

The Regional Court in Bratislava defended the rights of a group of 10 citizens from the city and non-governmental environmental organisations CEPTA, ClientEarth, VIA IURIS and Cyclokoalicia.

The Air Quality Improvement Programme, prepared by Bratislava’s District Authority is vague and absent of any specific goals set by the EU Air Quality Directive.

As a result of the ruling, the Bratislava District Authority will have to draft a new Programme that includes effective measures to improve air quality in the city in the shortest possible time.

The European Commission's platform for coal regions in transition: case studies highlight tilt toward coal companies

The European Commission's platform for coal regions in transition: case studies highlight tilt toward coal companies | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it

Without adhering to the partnership principle, the Platform for Coal Regions in Transition risks benefiting coal companies at the expense of local communities, in blatant contradiction to its stated goal.
In Poland and Slovakia, lack of transparency and insufficient participation have meant that many of the projects submitted to be financed under the Platform framework are of coal companies, while citizens from the affected regions have been sidelined.
