Berlin Could Grow most of its own Vegetables - Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy

Berlin Could Grow most of its own Vegetables - Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it
Cucumbers, lettuce, and radishes freshly picked from the rooftop, parking lot or partially closed down graveyard: with urban agriculture, vegetables thrive wherever there is space in the city. Green spaces have a positive impact on the environment, health and biodiversity. In addition, they also offer space and opportunities for local vegetable supply. A recent study now shows that there is enough space available in Berlin to cover up to 82 per cent of the city's vegetable consumption locally.

The era of cheap living is over

The era of cheap living is over | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it

The only way to fix our problems is to change our lifestyle. We need to buy less stuff, travel fewer miles, consume less resources, live in smaller homes (or share your larger home with more people). We need to live less complicated lifestyles including little or no social media. We can plant a garden, eat more plant based, locally produced food. We can slow cook more meals (including vegetarian and vegan options). We can recycle our clothes and household goods by giving them to stores such as Goodwill. We can enjoy the simple but rewarding experience of sharing a meal with friends and family.

Travel Transitions: How Transport Planners and Policy Makers Can Respond to Shifting Mobility Trends

Travel Transitions: How Transport Planners and Policy Makers Can Respond to Shifting Mobility Trends | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it

Travel behaviour has evolved in unexpected ways in urbanised areas in the early 21st century. This report examines how significant breaks with past trends happened - and why these shifts were not foreseen. The Covid-19 pandemic adds to uncertainty about future demand to travel. Forecast-led transport planning is not well equipped to handle uncertainty. The report presents new approaches which explicitly address uncertainty, are vision-led and enable the development of resilient plans. It also considers how governance and institutions can be adapted to support such a paradigm shift.

"Democratic climate model": Climate Resilience Needs Community Roots

"Democratic climate model": Climate Resilience Needs Community Roots | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it

Along with several design partners, Democratic Society took up the challenge of inspiring cities to experiment with new approaches to citizen participation as part of the EIT Climate-KIC Healthy, Clean Cities Deep Demonstrations project consortium.
Democratic Society also wanted to use this experience to develop a scalable model that could be experimented with in any city, anywhere.
The project brought together experts from financing, innovation, carbon accounting, and citizen participation to design and conduct strategic work programmes with cities.
Crucially, Democratic Society also employed Local Connectors in each city, skilled practitioners with expertise in policy and civic engagement, social innovation and design for sustainability, and locals in the cities they worked in.
They collaborated with city leaders and consortium design partners and joined the dots between the diverse actors involved. They worked towards a good transition that included government bodies, civil society organisations, grassroots groups, journalists, and businesses.
The locations for these programmes? The 14 European cities of Amsterdam, Edinburgh, Kraków, Križevci, Leuven, Madrid, Malmö, Maribor, Milano, Niš, Orléans, Sarajevo, Skopje and Vienna.

A WWF report reveals that - at a time of global food insecurity - half of the UK's wheat harvest each year (equivalent to 11bn loaves of bread) is being used to feed livestock in an "inherently inefficient" process that is fuelling climate change and driving nature's decline in the UK and overseas.

Can the Green New Deal save us? No it can’t.

Can the Green New Deal save us? No it can’t. | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it
The fundamental assumption underlying these beliefs is that economic growth can be “decoupled” from resource and ecological demands and impacts. That is, it is claimed that the rate of production and consumption can continue to increase while the resources needed to do this can be reduced to sustainable levels, along with the environmental damage it causes. This comforting faith is widely held, including by major global institutions.
