The Government of North Macedonia has declared a state of energy crisis to secure electricity supplies to consumers in the country. It will last 30 days.
The government’s decision enables measures and activities to be taken, including financial intervention to purchase additional quantities of electricity. It determines the rights and obligations of state-owned power producer Elektrani na Severna Makedonija (ESM) and transmission system operator MEPSO.
The government’s intention is to enable the transfer of budget funds to these companies.

Citizens of Skopje, the capital of North Macedonia, which is regularly included in the list of the cities with the most polluted air in the world, are currently breathing air that is less polluted than in the previous years, according to state authorities. They say the outcome can be seen as a result of dedicated measures to reduce air pollution.

The Secretariat of a new initiative to help coal regions in the Western Balkans and Ukraine transition away from coal towards a carbon-neutral economy has been launched by the European Commission. Mirroring the successful EU Initiative for coal regions in transition, the newly established secretariat will deliver support to coal regions in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo[1], Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, and Ukraine. 17 regions with significant coal mining activities and coal-based energy production will be the key beneficiaries. The initiative’s secretariat will provide direct support for its implementation and ensure collaboration across the diversity of institutions and actors that the initiative will engage.
