Urban planning - a must have for future cities

Most modern cities depend on quality urban planning to direct their growth and development, and to best cope with the challenges they face. Lack of urban planning usually leads to wild, unplanned sprawl which creates a host of problems, ranging from lack of infrastructure to high vulnerability to any kind of disruption. Good urban planning can help cities become greener, more resilient, more efficient, healthier, and a nicer place to live with rich cultural offerings and stronger community core.

Milan announces ambitious scheme to reduce car use after lockdown | World news | The Guardian

Milan announces ambitious scheme to reduce car use after lockdown | World news | The Guardian | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it

Milan is to introduce one of Europe’s most ambitious schemes reallocating street space from cars to cycling and walking, in response to the coronavirus crisis.
The northern Italian city and surrounding Lombardy region are among Europe’s most polluted, and have also been especially hard hit by the Covid-19 outbreak.
Under the nationwide lockdown, motor traffic congestion has dropped by 30-75%, and air pollution with it. City officials hope to fend off a resurgence in car use as residents return to work looking to avoid busy public transport.
The city has announced that 35km (22 miles) of streets will be transformed over the summer, with a rapid, experimental citywide expansion of cycling and walking space to protect residents as Covid-19 restrictions are lifted.

Enquête auprès de parents à Paris et à Milan » | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it

Italian cities announce plans to maintain reduced car use after lock-down | Eltis

Italian cities announce plans to maintain reduced car use after lock-down | Eltis | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it

Italian cities are looking to capitalise on the reduced car use resulting from the Covid-19 outbreak by taking action to improve mobility and ensure public safety.
The north of Italy is one of Europe’s most polluted areas and has also been notably hard hit by the Covid-19 outbreak. Due to the nationwide lockdown, car travel has dropped by 30-75%, which has also resulted in a large drop in air pollution. Now, as cities consider easing their lockdown measures, officials are seeking to prevent a significant increase in private motorised traffic and air pollution. In this context, there is a recognition that public transport could struggle as requirements to maintain social distancing need to be followed and people are likely to be wary of sharing enclosed spaces.

EXTRAPOLIS Newsletter : Milan launches Area B, Italy’s largest Low-Emission Zone | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it

In a bid to tackle air pollution and congestion, Milan has restricted access to the city for gasoline and diesel vehicles, thus introducing the largest low emission zone in Italy.
The “Area B”, as it was named by the city, covers about 72% of the entire municipal territory.
The municipality said that the introduction of “Area B” is part of a “definite, progressive and gradual set of rules to reduce particulate matter and improve urban quality in Milan”.
