Soholab | Towards a definition of socially oriented Urban Living Labs

This report aims to contribute to developing customized approaches for setting up, questioning and/or elaborating Urban Living Lab (ULL) approaches in the context of the regeneration of large-scale social estates and, more generally, deprived contexts. The literature review is illustrated with several existing foreign and domestic best practice examples of Living Lab cases in underprivileged areas. It therefore revisits literature on participatory planning, co-design and Urban Living Labs.
In the context of the SoHoLab research, this is the result of the second investigation (T2.2) that intends to guide the development of a tailored methodological framework for Urban Living Labs. Each university partner adopts different research angles, in relationship to its own institutional and planning context (Paris (Longjumeau, Taverny, Fresnes), Milan (San Siro) and Brussels (Peterbos), stage of the Living Lab and according to its own research disciplines

Learning loops in the public realm

Learning loops in the public realm | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it

Urban problems such as traffic congestion, safety and pollution are difficult to tackle as the mitigation involves multiple stakeholders. The aim of Looper was to develop new ways of decision-making that bring together citizens, stakeholders and policy-makers by building a participatory co-creation methodology and platform that demonstrate ‘learning loops’.
The Looper model addressed the whole co-creation process. Citizens and stakeholders debated on topical issues, then framed the problem and collected data. The Looper platform visualized the data, and enabled the co-design of solutions which were evaluated and the best were put into practice and monitored. The platform was tested in three living labs in Brussels, Verona and Manchester.

Soholab | The regeneration of large-scale Social Housing estates

The purpose of this report is to investigate the contexts of large-scale social estates in Brussels, Milan and Paris. It does this by providing an overview of the architecture and planning history of social housing within the 3 city regions and by positioning the production of large-scale social estates within this framework. Special attention is given to the last 15 years and the different measures developed for tenant participation and housing regeneration, be it informed by institutional policies, inhabitants initiatives or third sector promoted interventions. Indeed, we try to consider all types of social and spatial interventions that impact on these sites and its inhabitants. By zooming in on several sites within the three cities, these regeneration practices are discussed and critically evaluated in terms of social-spatial quality. Being an ongoing LivingLab experience, in the case of Milan, the main focus is on the site under study, while the analyses of the city regions of Brussels and Paris, in which new LivingLabs are set up, are informed by regeneration practices in similar estates.
