The New European Bauhaus launched by the European Commission last year will see scientists, designers, architects, engineers, and students exchange ideas this week on green projects that will help put Europe on a path to reach carbon neutrality by 2050, writes Florika Fink-Hooijer.

EU Commissioner Mariya Gabriel held an online meeting yesterday, 14 April, with the mayors of the European Cities of Innovation and European Capitals of Culture in a bid to closely engage local authorities into the goals of the New European Bauhaus. After the consultation, she announced that a new cooperation network has been created in a way that reflects the multi-faceted values of the initiative.

Today, 18 January, the newest grand-scale European Commission initiative was launched at a press conference. We are talking about the New European Bauhaus, which was declared as the continental “renovation wave” in the words of President Ursula von der Leyen back in September 2020 with the aim of giving style, substance and practicality to the Green Deal, which for many people perhaps remains something of an abstract concept.

The New European Bauhaus, announced by EU leaders last year as a style for the old continent’s green transformation, is starting to take shape. Last month, the European Commission awarded 30,000 euros ($35,190) each to 10 projects that best illustrate the movement’s values of sustainability, aesthetics and inclusion.
