The transition towards territorial food systems requires new public policies that consider innovative and effective formulas for participatory governance, among other facilitating elements. Food democracy impacts citizen empowerment when it comes to bringing together actors for this necessary action for change. The local perspective and the consolidation of participatory structures can be nurtured through networks such as those promoted by the URBACT Programme through Local Action Groups.
Un an après avoir été retenues dans la démarche nationale '' Territoires d’innovation'', les premières actions du projet '' La Rochelle territoire zéro carbone '' se lancent. La première coopérative locale du carbone est en cours de constitution.

The present study aims to present experimentation in addressing climate change in the case of the Nilüfer Municipality in northwestern Turkey and to examine the effect of joining an international network, as a key factor that may support urban climate experiments. The research is designed as a case study built on both primary and secondary sources. The Nilüfer Municipality is selected as the case area as it is the only signatory of Mayors Adapt and one of sixteen signatories of the Covenant of Mayors (CoM) among the 1397 municipalities within the Turkish Republic. Finally, this case study shows that although local governments have not been involved in the climate change policies at the national level in the Turkish context, the Nilüfer Municipality was able to develop its own experiments by being part of a transnational network, especially after signing the Covenant of Mayors in 2014. This finding leads us to the conclusion that supranational organizations can have significant impact on the climate experiments initiation of local governments that are important actors in the implementation of policies to address climate change as a global problem.
How can multi-level and metropolitan cooperation help cities emerge stronger from the Covid-19 pandemic? Here is our expert analysis.
Localising the Sustainable Development Goals. Knowledge Dossier (Pilot)
Building on key issues identified in the 2019 Policy Lab for EUKN member Germany on ‘Urban Transformation Pathways in European Cities’, this Pilot Knowledge Dossier investigates barriers to and opportunities for the urban realisation of the SDGs. It identifies the need for enhanced vertical and horizontal coordination across levels and points to the need for a place-based approach to adaptation, implementation, and monitoring. Download
In 2017, a bicycle sharing system entered Amsterdam with two more services following quickly. Use figures were initially low which is thought to be due to the high level of bicycle ownership. In addition, parking spaces for shared bicycles were adding to the pressure on public space from parked bicycles - which was already nearing capacity. The city’s response was to regulate access to public space for bicycle sharing providers by removing them.
We cannot think and act as if the world was the same as 2019. It is not, it will be not. We desperately need time to think and strength to resist the pressure of doing things as usual.
Barcelona hosts the 10th anniversary of the Euro-Mediterranean Regional and Local Assembly with global warming seen as a catalyst for deeper cooperation in the Mediterranean With the Gloria storm as an unexpected guest, the Euro-Mediterranean Regional and Local Assembly (ARLEM) has celebrated its 10th anniversary in the city where it held its first meeting: Barcelona. The Catalan capital welcomed over 100 representatives of local and regional authorities from the three shores of the Mediterranean, with climate change at the top of the agenda. The region is acknowledged to be particularly vulnerable to global warming.
Innovation is important to meet the Paris Climate Agreement’s long-term goals. Not necessarily because we need new or disruptive technologies across sectors, but because innovation lowers overall decarbonisation costs, allows for a wider set of options to guarantee an effective transition, and compellingly, can translate into national economic opportunity and contribute to multiple Sustainable Development Goals. But how critical is the role of the public sector to accelerate innovation in specific industries?1

This open-source toolbox allows placemakers to work on projects and achieve their goals to make better places regardless of their background or previous experience. This is a “one stop page” to find the right resource to apply to your project or context. Additionally, as these manuals are invented and developed by those intimately attached to the projects that the tool has been applied to, we can gain deep insights into the contextual application, applaud these placemakers’ tool contributions to the network, and even have the ability to reach out and ask advice for how to apply the tool in different contexts. From this collection of resources, placemaking work is able to be locally relevant, while globally competitive with international and multidisciplinary inputs to support a robust process and strategy, and therefore, a successful and enduring place users want to keep coming back to.
On April 23, eight Swedish cities – Enköping, Gothenburg, Lund, Malmö, Stockholm, Umeå, Uppsala and Växjö – took a major step forward in the climate transition. Within the framework of the strategic innovation program Viable Cities, they are now inspirers and blowtorches for other cities, in Sweden and the world, so as many cities as possible will reach climate neutrality by 2030. Cities and their partners will now accelerate and develop systems and processes within Viable Cities to achieve increased economic, social and environmental sustainability in line with the global sustainability goals. The eight cities yesterday signed a letter of intent, which is an important step in the process of formulating a Climate City Contract. In short, it is a question of changing how we finance climate change in order to speed it up.
In 2020, April 1st has been stolen. …derailed by a pandemic, the severity of which is only matched by its suddenness, and which makes us think rather than laugh. A pandemic that also brings us back to our condition as human beings, susceptible to disease – without borders or cure – and forced emigration. It also prompts us to remember that others on our planet face it far more often than we Westerners do.
Where were you on the night of 31st January 2020? In future years it might become one of those frozen moments in time. Like, where were you when you heard that Michael Jackson had died? That late January night I was travelling back from the EU Cities Forum in Porto, a bi-annual gathering of Europe’s urban policy makers. Coming through passport control, about 90 minutes before the BREXIT hour, I was confronted with an ‘Arrivals from the EU’ channel already barricaded with red barriers...
Although the North-West Europe area is considered as one of the most dynamic and prosperous areas of the European Union, households from some regions still face severe difficulties in affording their energy bills or suffer from a lack of adequate energy services at home. Generated in many cases by low energy performances in buildings, energy poverty is a common challenge to almost all urban areas of NWE, as 80% of the residential housing stock dates from pre 1990’s. Investments in energy efficiency are able, in most cases, to support citizens in the reduction of energy bills, lowering their dependence on external suppliers, as well as to decrease the environmental impact from energy consumption.
