Whether we are boiling water to make tea, activating a home appliance or relaxing under a hot shower, our daily behaviours and choices at home are important drivers of energy consumption.
IEA energy analyst Elisabetta Cornago looks at the potential for enhancing energy efficiency with policies and programmes designed to educate consumers and encourage them to alter their daily habits – without resorting to large-scale structural improvements. This focus is motivated by the observation that interventions aimed at promoting behavioural change are often cheaper to implement relative to policies that seek to encourage investment. Such measures also tend to be relatively quick to design and implement.
This guide has been put together by Friends of the Earth Europe and other civil society and trade union groups* committed to building better societies in Europe. It summarises the findings of a 6–month collaboration to find ways to talk about the sustainable, equitable, inclusive, democratic societies we want in Europe, and makes recommendations based on the findings of focus groups in five countries around Europe. The recommendations are intended for campaigners, communicators, activists and all those who want to inspire more hopeful conversations about the kind of Europe we want to live in.
This year cities doing well in terms of fair and ethical trade will be able again to apply and win one of the newest awards set up by the European Union. The EU Cities for Fair and Ethical Trade Award 2021 application period starts in just a week (Tuesday, 4th February 2020) and will close on 12 June 2020. According to the official website, the “EU Cities for Fair and Ethical Trade Award” celebrates EU cities who champion more sustainable trade, consumption and production, thus creating opportunities for producers elsewhere. Through knowledge-sharing and networking opportunities, the Award helps connect cities, allowing them to learn from each other and collaborate for greater impact.
Appointing a city poet (Stadsdichter) is popular among local authorities in the Netherlands and Flanders (Belgium). It follows a tradition, found in the Netherlands at the start of the XXI century. Venlo is considered the first city to appoint a city poet with Emma Crebolder becoming the first one in the Dutch-speaking area. Since 2003, for example, Tilburg has had a city poet, who is appointed for a period of two years and as of 2016 the city also appoints a Junior City Poet for 1 year. Dozens Dutch cities, including Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Groningen, Eindhoven, have appointed a city poet. Some of their counterparts in Belgium work for Ghent, Deinze, Hoogstraten, Geel, to name but a few.
In this article, Dr. Grit Martinez ist concerned with the role of culture and history in relation to local knowledge and values, as these are displayed in the interpretations and actions of distinct groups regarding climate change. She argues that it makes sense to communicate the climate in a manner appropriate to the given cultural-historical context and imaginary and to the relevant semiotic and material views of the people in it. The article is available for download.
Tessa de Geus has concluded her first 100 days as a transitions researcher at DRIFT. Over the last few months, she has used her fresh perspective to ask as many questions as possible about transition studies. In this short series she addresses three questions that stand out. In her previous blog she discussed how transitions studies might learn from traditions.
Copenhagen has launched initiative to encourage public rubbish collection, announced the Municipality. The city asks what would happen if all 626,350 Copenhageners gathered just one piece of garbage a day during the summer. People are encouraged to pick up waste in the Danish capital, take a selfie and post it on Facebook or Instagram, using the hashtag, #takforskrald or join Snapchat and send snap to ‘kbhkommune’. The only condition of the competition is that people have to collect garbage only within Copenhagen. The competition runs until August 12 after which the city will draw a random winner for the prize, which is a cargo bike.
The whole “fighting climate change” frame rests on the assumption that opposition is the best way to get things done. But that’s not always the case, as the linguist Deborah Tannen wrote in The Argument Culture: Stopping America’s War of Words back in 1998. Military and sports metaphors train us to see everything in terms of conflict — this side versus that side — and that perspective limits our collective imagination about what we can do to fix complex problems.
How much does natural gas benefit from its name, which includes the word “natural”? To answer this question, we conducted an experiment to investigate the public’s emotions and associations regarding the terms “natural gas” and “methane.” We randomly assigned respondents to one of four conditions in which each respondent was asked to rate their positive and negative feelings (affect) about one of the following four terms: “natural gas,” “natural methane gas,” “methane,” or “methane gas.”
Countdown is a global initiative to champion and accelerate solutions to the climate crisis, turning ideas into action. The goal: cut greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030 and to net zero by 2050, at the latest.
The Local2030 Spotlight Series aims to facilitate experience and knowledge sharing among stakeholders involved in the local response to the COVID-19 crisis through short videos. Partners and stakeholders around the world are invited to prepare and share 2-minute video contributions highlighting their perspectives on the main challenges and innovative solutions developed at the local level to fight the outbreak. A different topic of particular relevance for regions, cities and communities is addressed every week. Community groups, governments and public institutions, civil society organisations, business, academia, foundations, international organizations, and all those active in cities and communities, are invited to share a short video (2 minutes maximum) to share their vision, challenges, priorities and solutions in relation to the weekly topic.
During BP’s net-zero announcement yesterday, new CEO Bernard Looney announced that BP will “stop corporate reputation advertising” and that the current Possibilities Everywhere ad campaign will end and not be replaced. In December, we made a legal complaint against the campaign, which we believed could mislead people into thinking that BP are a renewables company, when 96% of the company’s spend is on oil and gas.
With “youth” becoming synonymous with climate action, corporations and politicians are increasingly using young people to portray themselves as climate serious.
Most people recognize the urgent need for climate action—in a recent poll, around 70% of Americans said that they wanted the U.S. to take “aggressive” action—but fewer clearly understand what needs to happen beyond vague ideas about solar panels and electric cars. A coloring book filled with comic book-style infographics is designed to help make the complex energy transition more accessible.
