Energy communities are the missing piece of Europe’s transition puzzle

Energy communities are the missing piece of Europe’s transition puzzle | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it
The role of the prosumer within the European energy transition is becoming more of a priority from all angles. And while this is being recognised by European policy – packages such as REPowerEU and the Green Deal for example provide a lot of momentum to advance energy communities and reap their potential benefits – more is certainly needed.

Powering Up Energy Communities in Central and Eastern Europe

Powering Up Energy Communities in Central and Eastern Europe | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it
With the power not only to counter climate change but also bringing considerable environmental, economic, and social benefits – the number of renewable energy communities and cooperatives in Europe is increasing. In central and eastern Europe, however, prospective energy communities have to overcome significant odds – with a lack of support and investment at the national level. EU-level rhetoric will have to be backed up by real commitments if the targets to boost such projects are to be met.

Experts on wheels: Vienna’s Climate Tour will spread awareness of climate action | TheMayor.EU | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it
The tour aims to act as an ambassador to Vienna’s comprehensive climate plan, with the goal of reaching climate neutrality by 2040. In that sense, according to the city, the tour would function as a multifunctional information carrier, that wants to draw attention. They want citizens to be enticed by the presentation and discover the climate measures for themselves.

The experts, that will staff the bikes, on the other hand, will provide all the necessary information about the city’s plans to tackle the issue and what individuals can do to help themselves. Also, people would be able to try out the e-cargo bikes as an alternative to personal cars.

Etterbeek in Belgium wants to use citizen savings to fund its green policies

Etterbeek in Belgium wants to use citizen savings to fund its green policies | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it

According to a report by Le Soir, yesterday, the mayor of Etterbeek, a district in the Brussels Capital Region, stated that local authorities needed to find more funds for green projects. Mayor Vincent De Wolf explained that the COVID-19 pandemic has left many municipal coffers empty and ill-equipped to finance important climate change policies.
This is why he proposed a loan scheme, where private citizens will be able to invest in their local governments, specifically for sustainability projects. The scheme he outlined showed that the money would be invested into the city for a period of 5 to 8 years and promised a 1.5% to 2% dividend rate.
The idea of tapping into citizen wealth, specifically for green projects is fairly unexplored, however, there are a few prominent examples from the European Union. One of the most successful case studies involves the city of Vienna and their scheme to sell shares from photovoltaic plants.
The basic idea behind that plan is to let citizens share the climate transition period and become an active part of it. On the one hand, it’s a way for the city to source quick funds and on the other, citizens who cannot make their own PV systems can take part in the green transition.

Heat or eat: Rising energy poverty in Europe

Heat or eat: Rising energy poverty in Europe | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it

Marine Cornelis examines rising energy poverty in Europe – and what consumers can do about it.

How can households be sustainably protected against rising energy prices and lifted out of energy poverty? Energy poverty already has dramatic social and health consequences for 50 to 125 million Europeans.

Due to the gas and electricity price crisis and soaring inflation, many more people might feel the cold and must make terrible trade-offs, such as having to choose between buying schoolbooks and clothes or feeding their kids.

Cooling buildings sustainably in Europe: exploring the links between climate change mitigation and adaptation, and their social impacts —

Cooling buildings sustainably in Europe: exploring the links between climate change mitigation and adaptation, and their social impacts — | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it
Across Europe, rising temperatures, combined with an ageing population and urbanisation, mean that the population is becoming more vulnerable to heat and that demand for cooling in buildings is rising rapidly. Buildings, as long-lasting structures, can offer protection from heatwaves and high temperatures if appropriately designed, constructed, renovated and maintained. The summer of 2022, with its successive long heatwaves and high energy prices, may have raised the sense of urgency given to the alleviation of heat stress. But there is a gap in knowledge on the extent of overheating in buildings and data and information is scarce regarding the share of EU citizens unable to keep their homes comfortably cool during the summer. This briefing examines key elements of sustainable cooling policy, and its potential impacts on vulnerable groups, by reducing health risks, inequalities and summer energy poverty.

n Dornbirn, citizens bought up all the municipally-issued shares in a photovoltaic project in just 10 days

Today, local authorities in Dornbirn, Austria, announced that all the shares in the city’s new photovoltaic project were sold in just 10 days. The project will involve setting up solar panels on municipal buildings like fire stations, schools and kindergartens, which will be financed through small scale citizen-driven investment.

The project also aims at helping people who lack the means to set up a solar farm themselves get in on the green energy transition. The new solar energy system should work to reach the city’s 2030 climate goals to triple sustainable energy production.
