Blockchain has long been seen as an important tool to support initiatives focusing on social impact, and today there are hundreds of organisations around the world looking to implement blockchain in areas ranging from banking the unbanked and providing identity services for vulnerable populations to protecting land rights and combating climate change.

A study entitled “Blockchain in the integrated energy transition” conducted by the Deutschen Energie-Agentur (dena) indicates that blockchain technology is already able to generate added value in many areas of the energy industry for both companies and consumers. The study explored the potential added value of using blockchain within the context of the energy transition based on actual use cases from the energy industry’s core areas of asset management, data management, market communications, energy trading and financing. The study was conducted using the expertise of 16 partner companies, two independent experts and nine scientific and business advisers.

Slovenian blockchain-powered energy trading platform SunContract has recently entered into a strategic partnership with Italian energy company Tecnoapp.

Under a cooperation agreement signed by SunContract and Tecnoapp, the parties are to work on the market expansion of SunContract Energy Marketplace and decentralization of the energy market in Italy.

SunContract is an energy trading platform that directly connects energy producers and consumers into an energy pool based on smart contracts, according to the platform’s website. Through the platform, Slovenian households are currently witnessing electricity cost reductions of up to 40% while also choosing environmentally friendly energy sources, SunContract says.
