RePowerEU: new mapping tool supports identification of go–to areas for renewables

RePowerEU: new mapping tool supports identification of go–to areas for renewables | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it

In line with the REPowerEU communication and the revised EU rules on renewable energy published today, EU Member States are required to map suitable land and sea areas for renewable energy project. This means designating ‘renewables go-to’ areas, and avoiding environmentally valuable areas.
The Commission has made available relevant datasets in the Energy and Industry Geography LabSearch for available translations of the preceding linkEN••• online platform to support Member States in identifying these go-to areas. This will help in the rapid deployment of new installations for the production of energy from wind and solar renewable sources.
The platform was developed by the Joint Research Centre and launched in December 2021. It brings together a wealth of information on relevant energy, industry and environmental factors to support infrastructure planning for the energy transition.

The underground vegetable farm thriving in wartime bunkers below London | Living

The underground vegetable farm thriving in wartime bunkers below London | Living | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it

Deep beneath London’s suburbs lies a gigantic vegetable garden farming hundreds of thousands of the capital’s freshest microgreens.
Since 2015, Growing Underground has adopted one of eight underground World War Two bomb shelters to grow plentiful, pesticide-free produce. The farming happens entirely indoors, away all from traditional means of harvesting greens.

The energy used to farm these foods is 100 per cent renewable. Customers can look forward to supplies of greens such as watercress and micro rocket, as well as herbs like Thai basil and garlic chives.

Quels auraient pu en être les critères ? Cinq sphères de la justice sociale peuvent être identifiées afin de préserver une liberté définie comme pouvoir d’agir. Rediffusion du 19 février 2020
