Cognitive Empathy - (Leadership Communication)

Cognitive empathy refers to the ability to understand another person's perspective, thoughts, and feelings without necessarily sharing their emotional experience. It plays a crucial role in effective leadership as it allows leaders to comprehend the needs and motivations of their team members, fostering better communication and decision-making. By leveraging cognitive empathy, leaders can build stronger relationships and create a supportive environment that encourages collaboration and trust.

Why ENFJs Struggle With Being Too Empathetic + How To Handle It

Why ENFJs Struggle With Being Too Empathetic + How To Handle It | Empathy Movement Magazine | Scoop.it
Why ENFJs can struggle with too much empathy
ENFJ stands for extroverted, intuitive, feeling, and judging, and with just 2.5% of the population falling under this type, it's one of the rarest ones out of the 16 personalities. They're a very friendly and outgoing type, but they can also struggle when it comes to putting their own needs before others' needs.

Empathy Loss in Dementia Linked to Brain Activity Changes

Empathy Loss in Dementia Linked to Brain Activity Changes | Empathy Movement Magazine | Scoop.it

Summary: Frontotemporal dementia, affecting about 3% of dementia patients in Sweden, is characterized by a loss of empathy that challenges patients and their families.

Using functional MRI, researchers found that patients showed no activation in brain networks associated with empathy when viewing distressing images, unlike healthy individuals. This lack of brain activity strongly correlated with caregivers’ assessments of reduced empathy, confirming a link between brain function and behavior.

The findings may improve understanding of this condition and help distinguish it from other psychiatric disorders with similar symptoms, like psychopathy.

New Study Reveals How Dementia Rewires Empathy in the Brain | Empathy Movement Magazine | Scoop.it
Research on Brain Activity and Empathy
Every year, approximately 25,000 people in Sweden are diagnosed with dementia, with around 3% of these cases identified as frontotemporal dementia. This form of dementia is particularly challenging to diagnose and is characterized by a loss of empathy, which can create significant difficulties not only for patients but also for their families.

In a new study led by Olof Lindberg of Karolinska Institutet and Alexander Santillo of Lund University, researchers analyzed 28 individuals with frontotemporal dementia using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).

Bio: Annette Dubreuil is an Embodied Creativity Facilitator, Coach and Focusing Teacher for people who want to transform themselves to change the world—to make it more caring and flourishing.

Abstract: Focusing is a deeply embodied practice that gives us access to the wisdom of our bodies, whispered to us via our felt sense. Empathy Circles that use Focusing practice allow for deep sharing with rich details; these details make space for the sharing to cross with our own experiences resulting with greater resonance. If combined with empathic reflections of how something relates to our own experience, we can have an increased sense of common humanity that builds our self-compassion; this is especially true for empathy circles that Focus on a specific topic.

Leading with empathy: transforming workplace culture in a digital age

Leading with empathy: transforming workplace culture in a digital age | Empathy Movement Magazine | Scoop.it
In today’s digital-first workplace, empathy has become a key driver of successful leadership. Historically, leadership often focused on efficiency and emotionless processes. However, the shift towards authentic leadership highlights the need for human-centric strategies. As technology becomes more integrated into our daily lives, the ability to lead with empathy has emerged as a competitive advantage. Leading HealthTech specialist Air Doctor examines this shift in strategy.

Ask your speaker to explain their perspective and why they feel so strongly. Listen, without interruption, putting aside judgements, counter-arguments and solutions

Summarise the core of what you have heard and check you have understood correctly, including the emotions and texture of their story. This does not mean you have to agree

Ask whether they agree with your summary. If not, ask them to explain more

Continue with this process till the speaker gives a resounding "Yes." They should at this point be likely to listen to your side of the story

Effect of cognitive-behavioral therapy-based physical play intervention on empathic ability of children with intellectual disabilities | Scientific Reports

Effect of cognitive-behavioral therapy-based physical play intervention on empathic ability of children with intellectual disabilities | Scientific Reports | Empathy Movement Magazine | Scoop.it
Empathy has a multidimensional structure, consisting of cognitive empathy and emotional empathy. Cognitive empathy refers to the ability to infer others’emotional states and understand their feelings and emotions. Emotional empathy refers to the ability to indirectly experience and share the emotions of others13,14,,15.

Empathy is an important social emotional skill, and the improvement of empathy levels can stimulate the development of prosocial behaviour and enable appropriate responses to others’emotions. Compared to typical children, children with IDD face obstacles in understanding and expressing empathy and its various components1617.

As a result, many children with IDD struggle to form and maintain interpersonal relationships, leading to a lack of intimate and meaningful social connections18. Although there are differences in empathy among children with different symptoms19, it still affects their social development.

Studies have demonstrated that empathy can be enhanced through training20. Empathy training within a school setting can be classified into different categories, including experiential training (where instructors facilitate “experiences” such as games and role-playing), didactic (based on lectures), skill training (involving lectures, demonstrations, and practice), and mixed methods21

Cleveland Schools to Receive Empathy Curricula After Teens’ Reported Violent Carjacking | Empathy Movement Magazine | Scoop.it
Humane education materials that help prevent violence by young people are on their way to local schools from PETA’s humane education division, TeachKind, following reports that two teen suspects—ages 14 and 17—were arrested after allegedly assaulting a woman, kicking one of her dogs, and stealing her car at gunpoint, and using another stolen car in an attempt to run over two girls just days later. In letters sent today to Cleveland Metropolitan School District Chief Executive Officer Warren G. Morgan II and Breakthrough Public Schools Chief Executive Officer Andrew McRae, TeachKind explains that humane education fosters empathy for all living, feeling beings—and TeachKind also sent along kindness-to-animals educational materials, including “Empathy Now,” a guide to preventing violence by young people.

Uncovering the components of therapeutic empathy through thematic analysis of existing definitions - ScienceDirect | Empathy Movement Magazine | Scoop.it

Highlights

There are numerous, sometimes contradictory, definitions of therapeutic empathy.

This leads to variation in how the concept is practiced, taught, and researched.

This study analysed therapeutic empathy definitions, finding six common components.

Therapeutic empathy involves exploring, understanding, shared understanding, feeling, therapeutic action, and maintaining boundaries.

Can murderers change - or are they born evil? | Empathy Movement Magazine | Scoop.it
Dr Gwen Adshead

The psychopaths I’ve encountered in my career have been neither exceptionally bright nor socially able, nor at all charming. They are usually so lacking in empathy that they cannot see the effect they have on others.

Radical empathy: preventing violence
In 2004 I met a man called Jack who had killed his mother when he was in his 20s. He had been found to be suffering with paranoid schizophrenia at the time, so he was sent to hospital for treatment.

Later, he joined a therapy group that I was running at Broadmoor Hospital. In the hour-long sessions the group members, who had all killed family members while mentally unwell, would talk about how they could avoid violence in future. Jack didn’t always seem engaged but after a year or so, just after another member had talked about past regrets, he spoke abruptly.

Political Empathy Lab (PEL) Reflection: Democratic Listening, Proximity and a Purple Flower

Political Empathy Lab (PEL) Reflection: Democratic Listening, Proximity and a Purple Flower | Empathy Movement Magazine | Scoop.it

Democratic listening is becoming an ever more important part of the study of deliberative democracy. Where past deliberative democratic theorists spent time on the speech act, more attention is now being given to the listening act.

What exactly happens when we listen to each other and how does that increase our potential to understand each perspective as citizens in a democracy?

Political Empathy Lab is observing this summer what political science studies substantiate, the idea that people feel more favorably disposed to you (even in cross party discussions) if you let them express themselves and you demonstrate that you are listening by your posture.[1]

Again, your responses as you speak are less important than your presence of just showing up and your humility in just listening.

Political Empathy Lab (PEL) | Empathy Movement Magazine | Scoop.it
Researchers at Penn and beyond are studying affective polarization.  PEL continues this work and applies it by equipping Penn students to connect with others by attuning themselves to their own thoughts and feelings as they listen to different points of view.

It strives to develop and cultivate practices for both the outer conversation and the inner conversation.  These practices and the regular exercise of them, especially the practice of listening, builds social trust and is a necessary precondition for deliberative democracy.

Some of the practices are explored, refined, and exercised in the spring course PSCI 4201 Political Empathy and Deliberative Democracy.
