How Do You Teach Empathy to Children? | TIME

How Do You Teach Empathy to Children? | TIME | Empathy Movement Magazine | Scoop.it

How do you teach empathy? Richard Weissbourd, the co-faculty director of the Human Development Psychology Program at Harvard’s School of Education, studies that very question.

“When you look at the state of the country today, you can see the consequences of our having demoted kindness and concern for the common good,” says Weissbourd, who directs the university’s Making Caring Common Project, which centers on the moral and social development of children. So he and his team have set out to put kindness and concern for others “front and center in child raising.”

Weissbourd argues that kindness is a muscle like anything else, and parents need to lead by example. In his view, kids should be expected to do chores, contribute to their community and help out neighbors in need. “Kindness develops when we practice it all the time,” he explains.

Empathy in Action: How Radical Empathy Can Revolutionize Classrooms

Empathy in Action: How Radical Empathy Can Revolutionize Classrooms | Empathy Movement Magazine | Scoop.it

by Le-Anne Goliath

Radical empathy involves actively seeking to comprehend the root causes of individuals’ behaviours and emotions and responding with compassion and support. In the educational context, this means recognising the impact of trauma and socio-economic challenges on students and addressing these issues with sensitivity and care. This approach is particularly beneficial in working-class schools, where students often face significant barriers to their educational success.

Empathy gives Marine Corps leadership trait No. 15 and a new mnemonic

Empathy gives Marine Corps leadership trait No. 15 and a new mnemonic | Empathy Movement Magazine | Scoop.it

The addition of empathy as a leadership trait for the Corps was originally reported by Task & Purpose. It joins justice, judgment, dependability, initiative, decisiveness, tact, integrity, enthusiasm, bearing, unselfishness, courage, knowledge, loyalty and endurance. The list of traits was originally adopted from an Army leadership doctrine in 1948 and updated through the years to include additional traits that aligned with the Corps’ values, according to the Marine Corps University Research Lab.

“Empathy helps bridge differences, promotes trust and can defuse conflicts,” Staff Sgt. Logan Bohmann, a drill instructor at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, told Stars and Stripes on Sunday.

How Can You Know if Your Empathy Is Correct?

How Can You Know if Your Empathy Is Correct? | Empathy Movement Magazine | Scoop.it

by Karla McLaren
Is it empathy or are you projecting? Here are 10 clues to help you know.

Empathy is first and foremost an emotional skill, and we sometimes cannot read emotions accurately.

In some cases, our empathy is inaccurate because we aren't clued in to other people.

In other instances, our empathy may seem inaccurate because people aren't clued in to themselves.

Can Watching Movies Rewire Your Brain? watching Just Mercy increased participants’ empathy

Can Watching Movies Rewire Your Brain? watching Just Mercy increased participants’ empathy | Empathy Movement Magazine | Scoop.it

By Rebecca Keegan
According to findings published Oct. 21 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, watching Just Mercy increased participants’ empathy for the recently incarcerated and decreased their enthusiasm for the death penalty.

The study is a test of what psychologists call “narrative transportation,” the idea that when people lose themselves in a story, their attitudes change. It’s the academic version of the frequently shared Roger Ebert quote in which he called movies “a machine that generates empathy,” and it’s a notion that many who work in the entertainment industry assume to be true but that no one has measured in such a scientifically rigorous way until now.

This is why leaders need empathy along with pragmatism

This is why leaders need empathy along with pragmatism | Empathy Movement Magazine | Scoop.it
This was a shocking display of detachment and highlights how leadership can fall short when they sacrifice empathy for expediency. And this isn’t an isolated incident either. It reflects a larger, troubling pattern of decision-making that prioritizes pragmatism at the expense of empathy. As these examples demonstrate, when leaders operate from a purely pragmatic perspective, decisions tend to backfire—which often damages morale and trust within the organization.

The most effective leaders, in my experience, know that tough decisions cannot be made with blind pragmatism. Instead, they ask better questions that force them to consider both the business and human impacts. How will this decision affect the people behind the numbers? What message does it send about our leadership?

Why empathy is key to this product designer’s work

Workhuman’s Susana Rojero on how she ended up in product design and why communication skills are just as important as technical skills.

When Susana Rojero first started college, she chose to study sociology. However, she quickly realised that this wasn’t the direction that she wanted to take her career, and so decided on a different path that had always been in the back of her mind – design.

After completing her bachelor’s degree in design, which combined graphic and industrial design, she began working at an advertising agency that was experiencing a surge in clients seeking websites or apps. It was this experience in web design that sparked her interest in the digital realm.

“The rest is history – 12 years after graduating, I am now a principal product designer”, she says.

Here, Rojero – who works at Workhuman – discusses how her career led her to Ireland and why empathy aids her in her role.

4) She shows empathy
Empathy, the ability to understand and share the feelings of another, is a key sign of love. A woman who loves you will feel for you and with you.

If you’re going through a tough time, she’s there to comfort you. If you’re celebrating a victory, she’ll be the first one cheering. She’s invested in your feelings and wants to be part of your highs and lows.

Her empathy isn’t just a sign of her love for you, but also an indication of her emotional maturity. It means she’s capable of putting herself in your shoes and expressing genuine care for your well-being.

Gaining some insight on The Empathy Dilemma

Gaining some insight on The Empathy Dilemma  | Empathy Movement Magazine | Scoop.it

“Here’s a lot of different definitions of empathy floating around out there. And I think that causes the confusion. But the one I use for the lens of my work is really most accessible to people. Is that empathy is the ability to see hear and understand and where appropriate feel. Another person’s perspective and then use that information to act with compassion. So it’s a method of information gathering. It’s trying to understand someone’s context so you can make the right next step together,” explained Ross.

Five pillars of effective empathetic leadership

Self-awareness
Self-care
Clarity
Decisiveness
Joy

Youth mental health: Teaching (and learning) empathy

Youth mental health: Teaching (and learning) empathy | Empathy Movement Magazine | Scoop.it
A few years ago Zaki worked with middle school students in the Bay Area to ask them how they felt about empathy and its value in their lives. In private, students shared that it was useful and powerful — something they might not have said in public if they were unsure of how others felt.

“We then showed students’ responses to each other. And when students learned those social norms, compared to students who didn't, they were more motivated to empathize,” Zaki said. “And then when we came back to these classrooms a month later, those students who learned about the popularity of empathy were also more likely to be acting kindly towards their fellow seventh graders.”

Zaki joins hosts GSE Dean Dan Schwartz and Senior Lecturer Denise Pope on School’s In as they discuss the power of empathy and how to cultivate it in young people. His research focuses on the neuroscience behind decision making, self regulation, social cognition, and perception, among other social and behavioral functions.

Marine Corps quietly adds 'empathy' to leadership traits

Marine Corps quietly adds 'empathy' to leadership traits | Empathy Movement Magazine | Scoop.it

"Empathy has been a leadership trait of successful Marine leaders for 249 years; we put it on paper and added it to our list.”

by James Clark

The question of whether empathy — which refers to the ability to understand the experiences and emotions of another person — should be formally adopted as a leadership trait dates back years.

In 2020, the Marine Corps University published a paper on the findings of the Marine Corps Organizational Culture Research Project, which looked specifically at empathy as a leadership trait. According to the paper, “some Marines think empathy should be an organizational value, perhaps even finding its own place in the leadership acronym JJ DID TIE BUCKLE.”

The paper goes on to include feedback from Marines, including a major at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms, California, who was interviewed in 2017, and who talked about adjusting the 14 leadership traits to include empathy, but did so in the most Marine way possible:

Cognitive Empathy - (Leadership Communication)

Cognitive empathy refers to the ability to understand another person's perspective, thoughts, and feelings without necessarily sharing their emotional experience. It plays a crucial role in effective leadership as it allows leaders to comprehend the needs and motivations of their team members, fostering better communication and decision-making. By leveraging cognitive empathy, leaders can build stronger relationships and create a supportive environment that encourages collaboration and trust.
