Latest Research Says That if You Want Someone to Extend Empathy To You, Stay Away From Feelings of Sadness

Latest Research Says That if You Want Someone to Extend Empathy To You, Stay Away From Feelings of Sadness | Empathy Movement Magazine | Scoop.it
Longstanding research has argued that empathy is typically reserved for the cases where negative emotion exists - a sense of sadness or pity for the plight of another. That may partly be true, but there's more to the story as it turns out.

A study published in the European Journal of Personality found that people are more empathetic during positive interactions when others are seen as warm and they themselves are expressing warmth.

Empathy is a broad social experience that can be divided into two primary types: cognitive empathy, which refers to your ability to understand another person's perspective, and affective empathy, which occurs when you're sharing in others' positive and negative emotions.

"That helped me create a protective layer around my life," Obama said. "I understood that I and I alone could protect my light. I had to protect it with how I reacted to what people said to me. I had to practice that time and again and tell myself, 'this is where empathy comes in.' Empathy is an important tool, especially in the White House. I had to ask myself, 'for the people throwing the arrows, what is going on in your world? Because this isn't about me – you clearly don't even know me.' "

Books That Develop Empathy and Perspective Taking

In order to engage as a citizen in your community, nation, or the world, taking different perspectives is an essential skill (Colwell et. al., 2020). Empathy is a crucial social emotional skill that also helps students analyze texts and develop literacy skills applicable in multiple disciplines, especially social studies (Colwell et. al., 2020, Ziemke & Muhtaris, 2020).

“Empathy can be grounded in day-to-day life when we consider it in conjunction with getting to know each other’s stories” (Ziemke & Muhtaris, 2020, p. 94). Students can get to know other's stories through reading about others that are different and similar to them. Students can relate to characters that come from diverse backgrounds through shared feelings when they learn more about them.

Minors Attack Dog With Bleach; Pushes for Empathy Lessons to Prevent Future Violence | Empathy Movement Magazine | Scoop.it

Following reports that a group of children around the ages of 10 to 13 threw bleach on a dog named aXurii and robbed her guardian, TeachKind—PETA’s humane education division—has just rushed a letter to School District of Philadelphia Deputy Superintendent of Academic Services ShaVon Savage, offering to provide the district with “Empathy Now” (a step-by-step, trauma-informed guide to preventing youth violence against animals) and to host free empathy-building virtual presentations for students.

TeachKind previously urged the same district to take action after two students allowed their dogs to viciously attack a cat named Buddy last March.

What Is Effective Empathy?
Simply put, empathy is thinking about the needs of others as if they were your own. The golden rule of treating others as you would like to be treated is another way to think about it.

People are incredibly gifted at sensing when someone or an organization is acting selfishly or disingenuously; likewise, they are pleasantly delighted to work with someone or an organization that takes a genuine interest in them and their well-being.

What empathy is, and isn't, in journalism

What empathy is, and isn't, in journalism | Empathy Movement Magazine | Scoop.it
Neither sympathy nor softness
Let’s get this out of the way first: Empathy is not a kind of softness, a squishy (read: unprofessional) attitude a journalist has toward a story, a source, a way of doing the work that undermines the veracity and clear-headedness of that work. Empathy is not agreeing with someone or being moved to tears or laughter by their experiences. It is not forging or experiencing an emotional bond. That is sympathy.

Empathy is the ability — or I would say the ongoing challenge — to try to understand another person’s point of view. This hinges on our recognition that we each see the world through a subjective lens crafted from the circumstances and experiences of our lives. If we don’t recognize this, if we think that what we see is the way it is, we have little hope of understanding others. Empathy begins with our acknowledgement of our own filter: the shoes we walk in, the shoes that are comfortable and comforting to us.

Putting empathy front and center requires placing ourselves in someone else's shoes to understand how that person is thinking and feeling. While empathy and compassion have always been important aspects of our healthcare industry, we're now seeing how critical it is across all work environments.

Research from Jamil Zaki, professor of psychology at Stanford University, said that empathy leads to increased morale, reduced stress and more effective feedback.

Leading Healthcare Organizations Choose Qualtrics to Deliver Ease and Empathy to Patients and Caregivers | Business Wire

Leading Healthcare Organizations Choose Qualtrics to Deliver Ease and Empathy to Patients and Caregivers | Business Wire | Empathy Movement Magazine | Scoop.it
“Empathy rooted in listening, understanding and acting has never been more critical in the healthcare industry,” said Qualtrics Chief Medical Officer Dr. Adrienne Boissy. "We cannot begin to fix the complex issues of access to care, disparities and purposeful connectivity with patients and caregivers without slowing down to listen via every channel available - a much more meaningful listening strategy for the emotions and values at stake.

Only when we understand those, can we operationalize empathy and act in ways that will make people feel seen, heard and valued - and as we combine that with quality, operational and financial data, we evolve the field itself.”

Leadership: How to Develop and Practice Empathy

Leadership: How to Develop and Practice Empathy | Empathy Movement Magazine | Scoop.it

Traditional definitions of empathy refer to it as the ability to “put yourself in another person’s shoes.” However, this is more of a sound byte and doesn’t illustrate empathy’s valued nuances.

For example, cognitive empathy is the ability to recognize and understand the emotion that someone else is experiencing. Affective empathy, alternatively, is not only identifying and understanding the emotion but taking on and mirroring that same feeling.

What is empathy?
Empathy is the ability to see things from another's perspective and feel their emotions. Putting yourself in another person’s shoes might lead you to act with compassion and do what you can to improve their situation. In doing so, you can reduce the other person’s distress as well as your own.

Imagine you come home to find out your spouse or partner is ill. Even if you were having a good day, you would suddenly feel their distress and tend to their needs. If a friend is angry about the way a boss treated them, you’d likely share their sense of frustration. Maybe you can’t solve their problem, but you can understand that they need to vent their emotions.

Turning diversity from a barrier to a facilitator of empathy in healthcare – BJGP Life

Turning diversity from a barrier to a facilitator of empathy in healthcare – BJGP Life | Empathy Movement Magazine | Scoop.it
This diversity is a cause for celebration. It can also present a barrier to empathy, which is frequently defined as understanding, expressing the understanding, and therapeutic action.3 Attempts to understand and appropriate ways to express understanding vary from person to person and culture to culture.

A reassuring touch may be the expected norm in some cultures, but a violation of morals in others. Asking a patient how they feel about a proposed treatment may delight a well-informed patient, yet signal incompetence to a farmer who may expect and accept that their doctor knows best. Spontaneously opening the door for an elderly woman may be appreciated, yet the same act could offend someone in a wheelchair who prefers to do it themselves.

A small 2021 study examined positive empathy’s role in daily life and found that it propelled kind acts, like helping others. Sharing in someone else’s joy can also foster resilience, improve life satisfaction and help people cooperate during a conflict.

Being Me Being You: Adam Smith and Empathy a book by Samuel Fleischacker

Modern notions of empathy often celebrate its ability to bridge divides, to unite humankind. But how do we square this with the popular view that we can never truly comprehend the experience of being someone else? In this book, Samuel Fleischacker delves into the work of Adam Smith to draw out an understanding of empathy that respects both personal difference and shared humanity.

After laying out a range of meanings for the concept of empathy, Fleischacker proposes that what Smith called "sympathy" is very much what we today consider empathy. Smith's version has remarkable value, as his empathy calls for entering into the perspective of another--a uniquely human feat that connects people while still allowing them to define their own distinctive standpoints. After discussing Smith's views in relation to more recent empirical and philosophical studies, Fleischacker shows how turning back to Smith promises to enrich, clarify, and advance our current debates about the meaning and uses of empathy.

Empathy and compassion

Empathy and compassion | Empathy Movement Magazine | Scoop.it
Empathy, whereby you put yourself in someone else's position and feel what they are feeling, is a much-appreciated virtue. But author Arthur Brooks in 'The Atlantic' argues that empathy is not necessarily a virtue. Desirable, yes, essential, no, is the opinion. This is an interesting argument.

Distinctions are also drawn between sympathy, which is feeling sorry for someone in pain, and empathy. As has been pithily said, it is the difference between 'get well soon' and 'I can imagine how ..

2. DEVELOPING AND NURTURING EMPATHY

The narrowness of what is permitted at work prevents many of us from actually seeing others, especially when we don’t share the same identities or experiences. But if we have not personally experienced discrimination or inequities, it can be easy to misunderstand or minimize the challenges other people face.

Empathy is fundamentally the curiosity and willingness to learn more about the experiences of other people. It means taking the time to learn more about the identities of the people around you, and how that locates them—and you—in the world. It means understanding that people are having radically different experiences because of their identities and that the playing field is not level for everyone. When we wake up to the realities of other people’s lived experiences, we develop empathy and are motivated to get involved in the change effort.

Studies Show That Dogs Mirror Your Behavior As a Sign of Empathy

Studies Show That Dogs Mirror Your Behavior As a Sign of Empathy | Empathy Movement Magazine | Scoop.it
How do dogs show empathy?
When your friends and family show empathy, they say things like I know that’s difficult to deal with, or I understand why you’re frustrated, and they give you a hug. Dogs can’t speak, nor can they hug, so how can they express empathy? Primarily by mirroring our behaviors, according to research. See if your dog has ever exhibited these behaviors that indicate empathy.

They yawn after you. No matter how awake you feel, it’s almost impossible not to yawn after seeing someone else yawn. This behavior is involuntary and psychological, but scientists understand that we mirror behaviors as a subconscious sign of empathy, and that we tend to “catch” yawns more often from people with whom we have a close relationship.

Put another way, soft skills are now the bedrock on which rapidly changing technical skills grow and evolve. Effectively, this puts managers in the position of role models and amplifiers of soft skills, as they create the conditions which can either encourage or stifle key behaviors like learning and taking risks.

The way to do it, we believe, is to put empathy at the core and ambition at the edges. With clear and mounting evidence, we see that empathy at the core creates the psychological safety and trust necessary to take risks, especially in persisting past failure.

The Empathic Supervisor
Being an empathic supervisor can be challenging, but it’s part of the job. First, we must work to cultivate empathy within our staff, including those who work in maintenance, the cafeteria, and security. The good news, as Zaki says in his TED Talk, is that “empathy is a skill.” It can be taught and learned. We learn empathy by working to understand how our colleagues think, perceive, and feel. It’s not enough to understand their positions on certain issues; rather, we need to understand their rationale behind these positions. Developing empathy happens when we go beyond casual hearing and seeing; it takes place when we consciously listen and observe.

Children need to share their worries and doubts, talk about why they get angry or cannot control themselves. Though every adult knows that an emotionally stable child will be a more focused student, such is the tyranny of expectation that most teachers are too hard worked and weary to tell their managements that a child’s understanding of himself is as important as his grasp of academic subjects.
