The Pope's Address To Congress: Let us remember the Golden Rule: | Empathy Circle Magazine | Scoop.it

We need to avoid a common temptation nowadays: to discard whatever proves troublesome. Let us remember the Golden Rule: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” (Mt 7:12).

This Rule points us in a clear direction. Let us treat others with the same passion and compassion with which we want to be treated. Let us seek for others the same possibilities which we seek for ourselves. Let us help others to grow, as we would like to be helped ourselves. In a word, if we want security, let us give security; if we want life, let us give life; if we want opportunities, let us provide opportunities.

The yardstick we use for others will be the yardstick which time will use for us. The Golden Rule also reminds us of our responsibility to protect and defend human life at every stage of its development.

(Against Empathy) The Trouble with Empathy

(Against Empathy) The Trouble with Empathy  | Empathy Circle Magazine | Scoop.it
As one of our most beloved companions at the museum, the library, and especially the theater, empathy is hard to shake. But a host of other scholars, scientists, authors, and journalists have also begun to think through its flaws and failures. While the liberatory potential of empathy cannot be denied, it can certainly be overstated, because, as research shows:

  • It’s voyeuristic: my empathy requires the exposure of your suffering.
  • It’s invasive: my empathy requires access to your private realm of feeling.
  • It’s appropriative: your feelings become mine.
It’s narcissistic: my empathy is really just a loose projection of my own feelings onto yours.

How Empathy Can Save the World

How Empathy Can Save the World | Empathy Circle Magazine | Scoop.it
We live in a world full of suffering—it would be difficult for anyone to spend even a few moments reading through news headlines and argue against that.

How we choose to respond to the difficult realities all around us is crucial, and in her new book, Brave Souls: Experiencing the Audacious Power of Empathy (InterVarsity Press), author Belinda Bauman aims to widen our understanding of this virtue that she believes has the power to transform the world as well as our own hearts.

How to teach little kids empathy
Almost everyone is born with the capacity to develop empathy. Whether we do or not largely depends on the kind of experiences we have in early childhood.

Empathy is the ability to understand and be sensitive to other people’s feelings. The effort to teach it is part of a larger movement promoting “social-emotional learning,” which the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning, a research organization based in Chicago, defines as “the process through which children and adults understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.”

So why is this concerning? Because a lack of empathy in anyone can have an impact on everyone. We do better in all of our endeavors when we're both giving and receiving empathy. Although we don’t all start with the same baseline capacity for empathy, we can actually work to increase our empathy levels. The following tips will help you to do just that.

  • Empathy Booster #1: Indulge in Fiction

The Empathy Gap and How You Can Close It

The Empathy Gap and How You Can Close It | Empathy Circle Magazine | Scoop.it
The 2019 SWES identified some key statistics when it comes to empathy:

82% of employees would consider leaving their job for a more empathetic organisation

78% of employees would work longer hours for a more empathetic employer

72% of CEOs say the state of empathy must evolve; this is a 15% increase from last year’s figures
Like any organisational change, an organisation will not be deemed empathic overnight. It is hereby essential to begin integrating empathy into your company culture in several ways. However, before you can decide when to implement, you need to decide what to implement and why.

We described how it supplements intervision with the advantages of layered empathic capacities to aid deeper hearing of each other and consideration of each other’s perspectives.

Today we continue by describing how intervision differs from supervision, how the intervision process itself works and how it contributes to well-being, personal growth, innovation and learning for individuals, organisations and groups.

What are mirror neurons, and how do they make us more empathetic? | Empathy Circle Magazine | Scoop.it
Perhaps, those firing mirror neurons are the source of empathy — and the better they function, the better we're able to relate to our fellow living beings.

But there's a flip side. What happens when the mirror neuron system is on the fritz? Research suggests there's a link between autism and misfiring neurons. A 2005 study from the University of California, San Diego, for example, looked at 10 people with autism. The researchers noted their mirror neurons didn't function in a typical way but rather responded only to what they did themselves, rather than to the actions of others.

Inside the Google Empathy Lab with Founder Danielle Krettek

Inside the Google Empathy Lab with Founder Danielle Krettek | Empathy Circle Magazine | Scoop.it

Behind the scenes with the team at Google, helmed by Danielle Krettek, that’s moving beyond design thinking to design feeling.

Krettek, who earned her stripes with Apple and Nike (Wieden + Kennedy), set out to change that—and the Google Empathy Lab was born. The lab’s foundation is in rigorous, risk-taking research and design provocations.

But their methods differ from what you’ll see elsewhere—as Krettek says, they’re “explorations into a future full of feeling.” She describes her work as Design Feeling—an evolution, she says, of design thinking, a practice that blends ideas from art, film and other storytelling media with the core practices of research, inquiry and product design. dscout sat down with her to chat about her approach and what goes on behind the scenes at the Empathy Lab."

Meditation has limited role in making you a better person, says study

Meditation has limited role in making you a better person, says study | Empathy Circle Magazine | Scoop.it
For decades many people have claimed meditation can change how we behave towards others and make us more compassionate.

Initial analysis indicated that meditation did have an overall positive impact. The researchers said meditation made people feel moderately more compassionate or empathic, compared to if they had done no other new emotionally-engaging activity.

However further analysis revealed that it played no significant role in reducing aggression or prejudice or improving how socially-connected someone was.

Helping teens learn to find compassion and empathy behind the screen starts at the top. When parents listen and model compassion (including with screen use), their teens do learn to do the same.

Can We Create Empathy in Others?

Can We Create Empathy in Others? | Empathy Circle Magazine | Scoop.it
How Do You Define Empathy?
Levitt: In my industry, "empathy" has become a buzzword. People are being told, “Step one, empathize or create empathy” mostly by creating a map of the customer’s step by step process. If you understood their process, you empathized. What is your definition of empathy?

Finkle: Empathy, for the most part, is the ability to understand someone else's experience and to experience their feelings — to some extent — firsthand. To empathize rather than to sympathize is to take on part of someone else’s experience and to resonate with it in some way.

Friends or foes: Is empathy necessary for moral behavior?

Friends or foes: Is empathy necessary for moral behavior? | Empathy Circle Magazine | Scoop.it
Abstract
The past decade has witnessed a flurry of empirical and theoretical research on morality and empathy, as well as increased interest and usage in the media and the public arena. At times, in both popular and academia, morality and empathy are used interchangeably, and quite often the latter is considered to play a foundational role for the former.

In this article, we argue that, while there is a relationship between morality and empathy, it is not as straightforward as apparent at first glance. Moreover, it is critical to distinguish between the different facets of empathy (emotional sharing, empathic concern, and perspective taking), as each uniquely influences moral cognition and predicts differential outcomes in moral behavior.

Empirical evidence and theories from evolutionary biology, developmental, behavioral, and affective and social neuroscience are comprehensively integrated in support of this argument. The wealth of findings illustrates a complex and equivocal relationship between morality and empathy. The key to understanding such relations is to be more precise on the concepts being used, and perhaps abandoning the muddy concept of empathy.

Your Relationship Requires Empathy—Here's How to Get It

Your Relationship Requires Empathy—Here's How to Get It | Empathy Circle Magazine | Scoop.it

One of the best tools we have as humans is the ability to feel empathy.

Posted Sep 12, 2019

Understanding and Developing Empathy

One of the best tools we have as humans is the ability to feel empathy. The world would be a better place if we were all capable of finding that place within ourselves to help another person feel that they are not alone and that someone else understands what their soul is going through. The good news is that you don’t have to go to years of graduate school to learn how to do this.

Empathy is the ability to share and understand the feelings of another person. When that person is your other half, the importance of empathy cannot be overstated. Having empathic experiences and exchanges with the one you love is one of the most bonding things you can do.

The limited prosocial effects of meditation: A systematic review and meta-analysis

The limited prosocial effects of meditation: A systematic review and meta-analysis | Empathy Circle Magazine | Scoop.it
Many individuals believe that meditation has the capacity to not only alleviate mental-illness but to improve prosociality. This article systematically reviewed and meta-analysed the effects of meditation interventions on prosociality in randomized controlled trials of healthy adults. Five types of social behaviours were identified: compassion, empathy, aggression, connectedness and prejudice.

Although we found a moderate increase in prosociality following meditation, further analysis indicated that this effect was qualified by two factors: type of prosociality and methodological quality. Meditation interventions had an effect on compassion and empathy, but not on aggression, connectedness or prejudice. We further found that compassion levels only increased under two conditions: when the teacher in the meditation intervention was a co-author in the published study; and when the study employed a passive (waiting list) control group but not an active one.

Contrary to popular beliefs that meditation will lead to prosocial changes, the results of this meta-analysis showed that the effects of meditation on prosociality were qualified by the type of prosociality and methodological quality of the study. We conclude by highlighting a number of biases and theoretical problems that need addressing to improve quality of research in this area.
