Artificial Intelligence (AI) provides educators and instructional designers with powerful tools to enhance the student learning experience. This guide presents compelling examples of AI’s role in transforming instructional design. It features practical examples of AI applications that are versatile and suitable for a broad spectrum of instructional activities, alongside others that have more specific uses.
The textbook explores effective ways AI can generate high-quality course content, foster creativity, personalize learning, and drive innovation. Across the 18 chapters, the authors emphasize that we must work together to ensure AI’s ethical and responsible use in educational settings.
This open textbook was developed for the Educational Technology and Design (ETAD) program in the College of Education, University of Saskatchewan. It contributes a collection of work submitted by graduate students enrolled in ETAD 873: Instructional Design. We concur with David Wiley’s (2023) perspective that generative AI tools hold the potential to significantly broaden and diversify the range of open educational resources (OER), making it an “absolutely incredible time to be an instructional designer!”
