The importance of Conversation & Dialogue in Education

The importance of Conversation & Dialogue in Education | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

How might conversation and dialogue support the professional development of educators?

In order to give the essence of why conversation and dialogue are so important and what educators can achieve from them, we can distinguish the usual continued professional development of educators and something that can be more engaging like thinking about purpose: Why am I an educator? What am I trying to do with pupils? Why am I being an educator with them?

What are the benefits of Digital Identity in the Metaverse?

What are the benefits of Digital Identity in the Metaverse? | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

As students head back into classrooms this fall, some schools are already using the metaverse for teaching and learning. Yet, according to Jaime Donally, engagement director at Identity Automation and a former EdTech K–12 influencer, the metaverse doesn’t exist — at least, not to its full potential.

“There are elements of the metaverse that are happening, but the metaverse itself is not open-ended like the metaverse will need to be,” Donally says. “Immersive experiences layering augmented reality information have been increasing, but it doesn’t mean that the metaverse exists today.”

A new era of Schooling: What is the Future of Remote Learning? | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

The coronavirus pandemic shifted the once-steady ground of higher education. Where there once existed classrooms and communal meeting spaces on campus, there were suddenly Zoom calls, breakout rooms and emails aplenty.

According to the National Center for Education Statistics, the number of undergraduate students enrolled in at least one remote learning (also called distance education) course was 97% higher in 2020 than before the pandemic in fall 2019 (11.8 million vs. 6 million). The number of undergraduate students exclusively enrolled in distance education courses was 186% higher in 2020 than in 2019 (7 million vs 2.4 million).

| Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

5 ways to shape the Future of Education | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

Many individuals are concerned that technology will eventually replace human intelligence because of how it is rapidly transforming our environment. Since technology might replace many of the skills and responsibilities that we have been teaching our kids for decades, some educators are concerned that there won’t be any more students to educate in the near future. But the truth is that education will always exist. It will merely be modified and assume new forms. Here are 5 factors that will shape education in the future.

[CHLOE 7] Tracing Online Learning from mainstream acceptance to universal adoption

[CHLOE 7] Tracing Online Learning from mainstream acceptance to universal adoption | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

Building on years of pre-crisis online learning adoption, nearly two years of widespread online accommodations to meet the exigencies of the COVID-19 pandemic have changed the higher education landscape. Details are fuzzy, but for chief online officer respondents to the CHLOE 7 Survey, the direction seems clear. COOs indicated that student interest in online learning has increased substantially in the past two years, and the majority predict that this interest will continue to grow in the next several years, though at a slower pace.

New combinations of campus, online synchronous, and online asynchronous learning are envisioned. When asked to project the prevailing modes of learning at their own institutions three years hence (2025), COOs predicted that few students would be studying exclusively on-ground (4% of traditional-aged undergraduates and 1% of adult undergraduates and graduate students), or exclusively online (2% of traditional-aged undergraduates, 9% of adult undergraduates, and 17% of graduate students). Instead, online leaders predict that the great majority of students at all levels would be combining on-ground and online experiences through a variety of blended and hybrid formats at both the course and program level.

COOs were asked to report on the scope and sufficiency of their institutions’ support of online learning, on which the vast majority of students would depend in 2025, if their predicted trend toward near universal student engagement with forms of online learning were to come to pass. Do schools have the online learning staff and resources to serve nearly the entire student body’s online learning dependence? Do they have the policies, training, services, and quality assurance measures in place or under development to assure faculty competency and student success in the anticipated mixed-mode environment? Are current institutional strategic priorities in line with these demand-driven needs? The answers were varied and nuanced, indicating progress in many areas, and some concerning gaps and challenges. More than half of responding COOs believe that meeting the anticipated undergraduate online demand at their institution will require realignment of institutional strategy and priorities. Most expressed optimism about this realignment, but some see unresolved tensions between long-standing priorities and shifting student demand.

| Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

The Metaverse and Web 3.0: Embedding ourselves into the Internet

The Metaverse and Web 3.0: Embedding ourselves into the Internet | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

We are on the verge of a massive reconfiguration of the way in which we digitally communicate, engage with one another, and do commerce.  Emerging at the same time are the Metaverse, the 3D, avatar-centric, virtual reality platform, and the decentralised Web 3.0 platform, built on blockchain, supporting 3D displays, and artificial intelligence.

Working together, the Metaverse and Web 3.0 will combine to support most online communication and commerce in just a few years.

While parts of these entities will stand independently, the two platforms will overlap and combine most powerfully to revolutionise the way in which we all use the Internet and host the combination of our physical and digital lives.  Perhaps “phygital” best describes the new environment that is emerging, combining the terms “physical” and “digital”: “Today’s consumer is Phygital: they make consumer choices and purchases both digitally and in the physical world.”

Gust MEES's curator insight, August 9, 5:37 PM

We are embarking on an online environment transformation that is every bit as revolutionary as the inception of the Web browser in 1992.  The Metaverse will supplant the browser for many of our activities.  We will immerse ourselves through avatars to engage in commerce, education, and social exchanges.  Now is the time to prepare for the transition.

[PDF] Education for Employability

[PDF] Education for Employability | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

For today’s university graduates, those career pathways are more competitive than ever. According to data from the New York Fed, young workers faced a more than 20% unemployment rate in June 2020, and were still looking at much higher unemployment numbers than the general population six months later. Today, only 34% of US college students feel they have the skills they need to succeed in the workforce—and that concern spans beyond US borders. In the UK, for example, 48% of employers report that students are leaving university with insufficient digital skills, and in India only about 50% of engineering students are finding job placements after graduation. During this fraught economic moment, universities and colleges are worried about providing students with the support they need to succeed in the job market.

Edumorfosis's insight:

Is Higher Ed really ready to embrace Hybrid Learning? | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

In the survey Changing Landscape of Online Education (CHLOE),  chief online officers predicted that by 2025, programs and courses that mix on-campus and online learning experiences will become the norm for undergraduate students, graduate students and adult learners. That vision—of blurred modalities across higher ed—is striking because it contradicts prevailing notions that older students and people seeking a master’s degree want to learn online, while adolescent students want entirely in-person experiences, says Richard Garrett, chief research officer of Eduventures and co-author of the report.

Rejecting hybrid conferences reeks of ableism

Rejecting hybrid conferences reeks of ableism | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

I believe hybrid conferences can act as a catalyst for academia to overcome systemic barriers to exclusive spaces of knowledge exchange. Failure to offer a virtual component for a conference represents an ableist view and makes organisers complicit in a system that excludes particular academics from participation. This complicity has a trickle-down effect whereby excluding certain academics from conference settings reduces the diversity of views and voices. Such exclusion also limits access to informal networks and opportunities for research collaborations.

Online Learning Leaders think fully in-person will be a rarity | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

Chief Online Officers (COOs) anticipate that most undergraduate and graduate students' academic trajectories will feature prominent online components by 2025, according to the Changing Landscape of Online Education 2022 (CHLOE) survey released today. The survey, conducted by Quality Matters, a nonprofit group focused on ensuring quality online education, and Eduventures, a research and advisory group, defined chief online officers as the primary officials responsible for coordinating online learning at the college or university.

These officials predict a much more central role for technology-enabled learning in the near term than did the college presidents responding to Inside Higher Ed's Survey of College and University Presidents last spring, many of whom envision a continuing rebound for in-person learning in the years ahead.

This way of delivering learning can be effective if it is focused on very specific outcomes or used to reinforce the existing knowledge of users. It has become part of our lives, so users will “look up” information to help them with work tasks whether or not this is officially provided by their organisations learning platform. Microlearning is here, and organisations should capitalise on it by building their own micro-content.

Educating students is no easy task, and the constantly growing demands of the education sector make teaching a high-pressure job. The accompanying stress is gradually taking a toll on teachers. A report by Education Support revealed that nearly 75% of teachers and 84% of school leaders admit they are stressed at their jobs. This report also showed that more than a third of educational professionals were experiencing mental health issues. At the same time, close to 50% believed their work negatively impacted their mental health. This leads us to an important question: what is driving these high stress levels?
