Digital technology and practices for school improvement: Innovative digital school model

Digital technology and practices for school improvement: Innovative digital school model | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

The aim of this study was to create a model which describes the main elements for improving schools with digital technology and helps to reveal differences between schools and identify their best practices and challenges. The innovative digital school model (IDI school) offers a framework for research but also a research-based model for schools to examine their own practices with digital technologies. The model combines previous research on school improvement, creation of innovations, and digital technology in education as a special case of innovations and learning as knowledge creation to define six main elements describing an innovative, digital school: visions of the school, leadership, practices of the teaching community, pedagogical practices, school-level knowledge practices and digital resources. The model was applied to investigate three basic education schools. The results indicate that the model worked: we found essential differences between the schools and their best practices and challenges for improvement. It worked particularly well for those elements, which are mainly the responsibility for leadership inside a school. The differences of various elements between schools were not based on socioeconomic background but on the school-level practices. As a conclusion, we suggest that to improve schools with digital technology, all elements of the model should be included in the evaluation and development process.

[Libro] Derrumbando las Catedrales del Conocimiento (Antonio Delgado) @Edumorfosis | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

These skills include planning, focus, self-control, awareness, and flexibility. No one is born with these skills, but we can all learn them over time. And, although it’s much easier to learn core life skills when you’ve had a strong foundation early in life, it’s also never too late. Brains continue to develop into our teen and adult years, which means adults can still learn and strengthen skills.

This guide for practitioners explains the science behind our core life skills, what affects their development, and how practitioners can help, including:

  • 5 Ways to Help Adults Build Their Core Life Skills

Here's how I became a full-time freelance eLearning Designer

Here's how I became a full-time freelance eLearning Designer | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it
Earlier this year, I shared with you that I made the transition into becoming a full-time freelance eLearning designer. And while I’ve been freelancing during my nights and weekends for the past several years, it has always been my long-term goal to make it my full-time gig—and trust me, it took a long time and a lot of work to make it happen!

Unfortunately, I think one of the biggest misconceptions folks have about freelancing is that you just decide one day to quit your full-time job and start a business. Well, I’m here to tell you that assumption could not be further from the truth! And while there are some folks out there who haphazardly make the leap like this, the reality is that most of them fail.

For me, the journey to becoming a full-time freelance eLearning designer is something that I’ve been working towards for many years. And the truth is, I never had a specific date in mind for when I would make the transition. Instead, I focused on a set of goals and milestones that would ensure my success when the time came, no matter how long it would take me to make it happen.

Education, Disrupted

Education, Disrupted | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it
Employers are confronting sizable skills gaps in all parts of their operations, at all levels, and they can’t seem to fill them by simply hiring new people. In today’s tight labor market, there are about 7 million open jobs for which companies are struggling to find qualified candidates because applicants routinely lack the digital and soft skills required to succeed. In the face of rapid technological changes like automation and artificial intelligence, helping employees keep pace is challenging. And companies are wrestling with how to retain top talent — a critical differentiator in a hypercompetitive environment. No wonder a staggering 77% of chief executives report that a scarcity of people with key skills is the biggest threat to their businesses, according to PwC’s 2017 CEO survey.

It is true that many people understand the value and long tradition of university research in driving medical and technological breakthroughs. But today’s challenges — a changing climate, political and economic uncertainty, human migration — call for expertise beyond science and technology. Having been a dean at two major urban research universities, I know how rarely we field calls from civic or business leaders requesting help from our economists, historians, sociologists, psychologists, and many other experts.

Today’s economy demands Lifelong Learning Skills. How can institutions keep pace?

Today’s economy demands Lifelong Learning Skills. How can institutions keep pace? | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

The shelf life of skills is shortening in today’s workforce. Automation is creeping into most sectors; the gig economy is booming; and all of these developments require that workers upskill, reskill, and master soft skills.

Colleges and universities play an integral role in delivering some of these skills, but they fall woefully short in delivering on the country’s lifelong learning needs. How can education providers and companies bridge the gap between the traditional, front-loaded educational experience and the ever-evolving needs of an increasingly fast-paced and turbulent economy and society?

Edumorfosis's insight:

With so many options out there, finding the ones that will benefit our students can take some time, however there are enough which are easy to get started with and that offer ready-made lessons or activities, which is a plus for busy educators.

How will teaching and learning practices over the next 10 years have to evolve to serve the learners of the future?

The good news is that digital teaching and learning are continuing to evolve. We have recently seen instructional designers use more and better tools that allow you to create unique and different learning experiences. Students are also continuing to evolve; they are increasingly requiring more stimulation to stay motivated and connected to their learning environment. Therefore, we must work harder. Our biggest challenge is to constantly innovate and search for new techniques, new tools, and mechanisms that meet the expectations of our future students.

The dawn of the Educational Influencer is here. Want to become a Canvas LMS Advocate? | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

Most of the top players in the “LMS Space Race” have a thriving community of educators helping one another make the most of the platform they inhabit. Live and online events and campaigns by the companies ensure those communities feel valued. It is, of course, a strategic marketing ploy –which may or may not save costs in customer service– but one that is not easy to accomplish.

When properly leveraged, there is no reason why “community capital” should not feature, even prominently, in the company’s valuation narrative. Which is different from just having a large user base, among other things because if you play your cards right, you won’t have to trick people into getting their data. They’ll be happy to.

Which leads to ask: What is the strongest, most positive and, of course, largest LMS community of all?

Coursera, the online learning platform, is extending its reach in traditional postsecondary education, announcing it would offer a bachelor's degree for the first time from a U.S. university.

The University of North Texas, a public research institution, will work with Coursera to offer an online bachelor of applied arts and sciences starting this fall that is tailored to the needs of students who have some college credit.

This is the latest example of an online education provider trying to broach the undergraduate education market, though other attempts have yielded mixed results.

Automation in Education: What teacher trainees should know

Automation in Education: What teacher trainees should know | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

Automation is set to drastically alter the workplace, but just how much will technology such as artificial intelligence (AI) affect teachers?

Such information is helpful for those aspiring to enrol in teaching courses at universities – knowing how, when, what, where and who will be impacted by automation’s impact on the profession lets students make the right preparations for their future careers.

According to a study by Silver Swan Recruitment, the teaching profession has “an incredibly low chance of automation” in the future at just one percent, one of the lowest on their list.

Research by McKinsey Global Institute’s 2018 report on the future of work echoed this.  They estimate that the number of school teachers will grow by five to 24 percent in the US between 2016 and 2030; for countries such as China and India, the estimated growth will be more than 100 percent.

They are also excellent assessment tools for implementing a personalized learning approach since students are encouraged to use their talents to create original content.

When you imagine a modern classroom, what do you see? Are there rows of forward-facing student desks? Is there a lectern or a teacher’s desk at the front of the room?

Increasingly, that’s not the reality. Educational technology and emerging workforce trends are key reasons why. Instead of sitting quietly in rows of desks, students are encouraged to move around and collaborate in groups. Newer classroom furniture options enable students to better see their teachers and to work independently and comfortably, with classmates or one on one with instructors. These innovations reflect the increased demand for a workforce of people who can collaborate and think critically, among other things.
