Simultaneous teaching — also called simulcast or concurrent — is what many districts across the country have settled on in an attempt to solve the logistical jigsaw puzzle involved in bringing back some students for in-person instruction while others continue learning from home.

Los cambios sistémicos en la educación vienen ya de atrás, cuando el desarrollo de internet convierte el acceso a la información en una cuestión de apenas segundos. Y ahora la tecnología ha demostrado que alumnos y profesores pueden liberarse de la necesidad de compartir tiempo y espacio para las actividades educativas. El futuro es la educación híbrida, y, más allá de la formación básica obligatoria, todas las instituciones tendrán que adaptarse al nuevo escenario, más digital. Si no lo hacen, el riesgo es la irrelevancia, dada la pujanza de nuevos centros de formación alejados de los moldes tradicionales.

¿Perderán los profesores importancia en este nuevo entorno? No, o incluso la ganarán si se adaptan con éxito.

I’m giving myself some open space to think about ‘Learning’ in the broadest sense: consider it some graffiti that i’m spraying over my existing knowledge. This is shared not as a coherent body of work, but rather the things that i am currently most interested in. Today, this concerns evaluation: the ways we measure what we do, in terms of learning programme or experience design. Typically i would view this through a lens of triangulation: choose three out of the following approaches, and triangulate between them. You could choose from ‘observation of behaviour’, ‘self reported learning and change’, ‘co-created stories of change’, ‘formally measured assessments of knowledge’, ‘inferred knowledge’ (e.g. through simulations), and a whole host of others.

What will education look like in 2031?

In the next 10 years, we need to reimagine the student experience, delivering services and learning where they want, how they want, and in three clicks/interactions or fewer, without students ever providing the same information twice. We need to offer stackable, individualized credentials that allow learners to upskill and reskill quickly.

A decade from now, we won’t be an institution you just attend for a full-time two-, three- or four-year program and credential. We will be an applied institute for lifelong learners, maintaining a membership-like relationship with those we serve. In 2031, the classroom will look nothing like it does today. We will innovatively blend physical, virtual, and experiential learning such that traditional environments will likely take a backseat.

Studies have shown that students learn better from instructors displaying positive emotions—in other words, an upbeat lecturer is more effective than someone delivering in monotone. But when video lessons are led by computer animations instead of live instructors, how much do their simulated emotions matter?

That’s the subject of a research project at the University of California at Santa Barbara. Researchers have created a series of video lessons—some delivered by humans and others by animated digital characters—to see whether students notice the difference, and how it matters.

The number of ransomware attacks targeting universities has doubled over the past year and the cost of ransomware demands is going up as information security teams struggle to fight off cyberattacks.

Analysis of ransomware campaigns against higher education found that attacks against universities during 2020 were up 100 percent compared to 2019, and that the average ransom demand now stands at $447,000.

In today’s fast-changing remote environment, virtual presenting is the new way business and education communication is done. When I say virtual presenting I’m referring to when you share your content in-screen during a video call or recorded video, while maintaining the ability to keep your video presence alongside your content and interact with your visuals versus hiding behind them (similar to how your local weather person operates).

Research shows virtual presentations lead to more engaging communication. Virtual presenters naturally choreograph their movement to go hand-in-hand with the content, and the in-screen content brings to life their talk-track.

Today, there are surprisingly few people even presenting with the screen-share function on video calls. This seems to be because they don’t want to hide behind their content. However, with the ability to virtually present next to your face using tools like Zoom, live video meetings will quickly evolve in 2021 and an unexpected group will decide the tech “winners” in this category: Educators. Here are the roles teachers will play in shaping technology use.

The next campus is hybrid. Prior to 2020, colleges and universities around the world had started to offer distance learning and invest in the technologies necessary to provide remote course offerings. COVID-19 accelerated this trend dramatically. In the future, students will expect the choice to attend courses and access university services through in-person, remote, and hybrid environments. Not only will these hybrid learning environments provide more personalized learning offerings for students, but they will also provide greater flexibility and access for students from diverse geographic and economic backgrounds.

All in all, 2020 will go down as one of the most challenging and impactful years in history. It will also be known as one of the most transformative, with companies and individuals adjusting quickly to the new normal in both work and play, with a "socially distant" way of life changing how people interact and communicate.

Even amidst the chaos, we saw an influx of existing technologies finding new industry opportunities, such as videoconferencing tools, streaming platforms such as Netflix, telehealth applications, EdTech platforms, and cybersecurity, to name a few. All of these technologies are powered by one fundamental thing, yet this entity isn't being tapped to its full potential by SMBs and enterprises alike.

That thing is data, collected by companies with the intent to inform business decisions and better understand and serve their customers. However, from what I have seen, more than 80 percent of data that businesses generate goes unused. This will drastically change in the next three years, with the majority of the data consumed being put to use.
