Shelly Reckow VanVoorst's curator insight, October 25, 2015 11:42 AM

I scooped this article because it provides research information on the literacy gains that students make because of blogging in the classroom.  The article also includes some basic ways to incorporate blogging into the classroom, but other articles probably do a better job of offering advice in that area.  My hope is that teachers will read through this article and understand that research supports the idea of students increasing their literacy skills through the use of digital blogging.  Perhaps understanding that will be enough encouragement for one of them to try it out in their own classroom.

Jamie Dammann's curator insight, October 25, 2015 8:33 PM

Technology: I chose this resource because as an English program coordinator I am asked all the time about reading comprehension and how to help students. I think that this takes journaling to the next level and I will share this with schools that are struggling with reading comprehension issues.

Institutions find success by developing online programs in-house rather than outsourcing | Educational Technology News | Scoop.it
As concerns about outsourcing ring out across online education, several institutions have carved out niches by developing in-house capacity that resembles OPM functions.
EDTECH@UTRGV's insight:

At UTRGV we partnered with an OPM for a while. After a few years, we decided to do it ourselves.

Why People Matter More than Algorithms

Why People Matter More than Algorithms | Educational Technology News | Scoop.it

"There’s a lot to love about an algorithm. For one thing, it’s orderly. The procedure for solving a formula of this kind is a step-by-step progression. The nice thing is that it includes repetitive calculations, and the familiarity feels friendly. When you arrive at the algorithm’s solution, you also feel a sense of accomplishment. I don’t know if computer software is capable of developing feelings about the algorithms it solves."

EDTECH@UTRGV's insight:

Instead of data-based decision making, we should be practicing data-informed decision making. There's a difference.

With their industry under scrutiny, OPM (Online Program   Management) leaders ponder their role

With their industry under scrutiny, OPM (Online Program   Management) leaders ponder their role  | Educational Technology News | Scoop.it

'During almost 30 years as a for-profit college official and as president of two companies that help colleges and universities deliver their academic programs digitally, Steve Fireng has had a front-row view of the evolution of online higher education.

The early days, he said at a conference here last week, were best described as "deans gone wild," in which individual schools or departments (usually a business school) within larger universities, acting independently and untethered to any larger institutional strategy, started an online program and (usually) saw it take off."

Less Screen Time and More Socialization

Less Screen Time and More Socialization | Educational Technology News | Scoop.it

"It probably won’t come as a surprise to you that we spend too much time in front of a computer screen. We work in front of a computer, check our smartphones throughout the day, and relax with a tablet in the evening, either watching a show or playing digital games. Our children watch us and copy us, but their screen time is hurting them more than helping them."

EDTECH@UTRGV's insight:

If we left it up to the kids, they would say that they use their screentime to socialize.

Infographic: 10 Ways to Build a Culture of Exceptional Customer Experience in Schools

Infographic: 10 Ways to Build a Culture of Exceptional Customer Experience in Schools  | Educational Technology News | Scoop.it

"As local populations change and alternative schooling options continue to expand, public schools throughout the U.S. are confronting the funding challenges associated with dramatic shifts in student enrollment. School leaders must consider creative new ways to build trust across their communities, appealing directly to their most important customers—students and their families."

EDTECH@UTRGV's insight:

When I came across this article I had to chuckle. Not too long ago I discussed the need to build a culture of customer service for our online programs at a national conference. The topic was met by my peers with skepticism. "That's not my job!" I heard some faculty say. Then, last year at the same conference, the main topic of discussion was the increased competition programs were experiencing from for-profit (and non-profit) online universities who were poaching their students. I wonder what they think about developing a culture of customer service now. <grin>

Tackling Digital Equity in the Classroom - Strategies for Teachers

Tackling Digital Equity in the Classroom - Strategies for Teachers | Educational Technology News | Scoop.it

"Thanks to initiatives such as the Federal E-Rate program, which provides discounted Internet access and funding for schools and districts, most students now have the ability to get online while in school. However, once students head home, they may lack high speed Internet as well as a device other than a smartphone, resulting in what policymakers now term the homework gap."
