Schools Can Fight Fake News by Teaching Kids to Think Like Fact-Checkers | Education Today and Tomorrow | Scoop.it

"After an initial pilot round, the researchers realized that most students lacked the basic ability to recognize credible information or partisan junk online, or to tell sponsored content apart from real articles." As the team later wrote in their report, “many assume that because young people are fluent in social media they are equally savvy about what they find there. Our work shows the opposite.”

A Milwaukee Teacher Reflects on Class Size and Why It Matters to Learning

A Milwaukee Teacher Reflects on Class Size and Why It Matters to Learning | Education Today and Tomorrow | Scoop.it

Milwaukee kindergarten teacher Rebecca Segal, a member of the Milwaukee Teachers' Education Association and WEAC, recently had the pleasure of experiencing a classroom of just 12 kids rather than her usual 30.

"I got to look every student in the eye as they talked to me and show them through my focused attention how much they mattered and are loved," she writes in a column in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

"It was such a beautiful day. I was in a great mood all day because of how special it was.

"And then it hit me: This is how it could be every day for each of these kids. And I thought about how the next day, we would go back to same, stressful, 30-kids-clamoring-for-attention noise.

"And my heart sank."

California NBCT Laura Bradley says being an educator today offers far more opportunities for growth:

"For me, the classroom still offers the challenges, creativity and fulfillment that keep me excited to come to work every day. From National Board Certification in 2005 to Google Certified Innovator in 2012 to working with PBS this year as a Digital Innovator All-Star, taking charge of my own professional development has kept my classroom an exciting and innovative place for me (and my students)." Thanks to Annette Christiansen for sharing this resource on the NEA edCommunities Educational Leadership community.

Digital Play for Serious Learning

Digital Play for Serious Learning | Education Today and Tomorrow | Scoop.it

Jordan Shapiro, author of The New Childhood, discusses the roles of parents and schools in teaching children to use technology through play. ...

"When you look at the benefits of digital play, the resistance schools have doesn’t really make any sense. While schools have very little resistance to coding, there is resistance to game-based learning. There is also very little resistance to 3D printing or maker labs, which are digital play. That doesn’t make sense to me—if you think it’s great for kids to develop skills in a digital world, then that is true for games and for digital creation."
