Check out Moodle, .LRN, eFront, Dokeos, Sakai, and ATutor. The author loves Moodle, but as a faculty trainer, I love Sakai. If you use Blackboard or something similar, Sakai works in a similar way, with emphasis on collaboration, but with many free tools and affordable vendors.
