Student PIRGs’ 2014 study “Fixing the Broken Textbook Market” found that 65% of students do not buy all the educational material required by professors for reasons of cost. In a 2016, they discovered that $3 billion in financial aid had gone toward paying for textbooks in that year.

I can't find an OER text I like for teaching HTML5/CSS, but I found a text the students can buy used from Amazon for less than $20 (including shipping). A prior instructor was using two publisher textbooks that students had to pay over $250 for..

About 85% of new college or university students had not purchased college textbooks by the first day of class or decided not to buy the textbooks at all, according to a new survey of students conducted by Wakefield Research on behalf of VitalSource Technologies LLC.

Community college faculty show high levels of interest and engagement in OER and are likely to promote OER use to colleagues, according to a new report.

Last year Achieving the Dream began a $9.8-million project to use open educational resources (OER) to create degree programs at 38 community colleges.

One of the colleges is from NC--look at the comments to the article...OER definitely attracts controversy..funny how quality is often brought up, but not for publisher textbooks or materials (tests, assignments), in which you can find errors, both small and large..
