Single mothers who attend college full time spend an average of nine hours a day on care and housework. And on a weekly basis, single mothers spend an average of 15 hours in direct childcare activities.  That time commitment leaves less time for coursework and threatens their academic success, the Institute for Women's Policy Research finds in a policy brief it released today.

The U.S. Department of Education plans its first effort to expand access to free, open digital textbooks and materials for colleges nationwide with a $5 million federal appropriate, The Washington Post reports.
Becky Roehrs's insight:

OER is an excellent idea, but is difficult to provide for fields with constant changes. Just like online courses, faculty are often expected to create OER materials as well as teach 5-6 courses  as well, often, with no or little compensation..for the amount of time needed to create, update and/or use OER resources.

Ugh-another reason student eval's should not be used in promotion/compensation decisions..it would be interesting to know if male/female students differ in how they evaluate male/female professors..

Our community college has an excellent University Transfer program and have Bilateral agreements with over a dozen Universities and Colleges; plus schedule numerous campus visits each semester from university and college admissions counselors. I have an Associate degree, Bachelor's and Master's.

At national gathering of educators, many see erosion of opportunity -- even as data show continuing impact of earning a college degree.

Students (whether from high- or low-income families) who complete a higher ed degree, "have very similar earnings outcomes"

 

The article also points out the make-up of faculty will change in the next 10 years: more women, more people of color, and more part-time faculty and according to students and faculty, more women (60%) are providing the "most effective teaching strategies for engaging students of diverse backgrounds"...

New consumer advocacy report highlights high cost of textbook bundles, but publishers say findings are misleading.

The study reviewed the 10 largest courses at 40 two- and four-year non-profit institutions, and found that students were paying 32 percent to 68 percent more for a new textbook and access code (a Textbook bundle) was required; vs other introductory courses that allowed students to buy used books.

 

The report "estimated that by switching to OER for the 10 courses included in the study, colleges across the U.S. could save students $1.5 billion a year."
