Starting parent involvement from an early age helps set the pace for parent involvement in the future. I truly believe if parents are able to experience what their children are experiencing as the child moves from grade to grade the parent will be less hesitant to get involved. Also, it shows the child that education is valuable.Giving parents an opportunity to learn how their children are being taught provides them the skills they can also use to support their child's learning. I love the idea of parents coming into the classroom to learn next to their child.

English as a Second Language teachers bridge language, cultural gaps

English as a Second Language teachers bridge language, cultural gaps | Dual Language and English Learner Education | Scoop.it
Judy Ayala doesn’t just speak the language, she’s lived the experience.
Sheyla Shreck's curator insight, April 24, 2016 1:01 PM
I truly believe that being an ELL learner has given me an advantage in working with ELL students. As Ayala states having experienced first hand the exhaustion and frustrations of learning a new culture gives you an opportunity to help learners and families in the same situation. This is specially important with families who had a less positive experience with ELL programs and feel that their children will be better off without it. In having that language connection and similar experience you can help parents understand how things have changed and how we work together for the success of their children.

Bilingualism as a Life Experience

Bilingualism as a Life Experience | Dual Language and English Learner Education | Scoop.it
What we’re learning about the lasting cognitive effects of speaking two languages.
Sheyla Shreck's curator insight, April 30, 2016 2:25 PM
In a monolingual culture, how do we preserve the abilities of bi or multi-lingual populations? Being able to speak more than one language has been shown to be an asset both at home and abroad. Monolinguals only have the potential of increasing their knowledge in one language, whereas, multilingual speakers have the potential to learn, interact and develop their knowledge in many fields of content and social interactions. Language learning have many social and cognitive advantages, supporting language diversity is key to global citizenry and democracy.

How Dual Language Learning Could Help Curb Education Inequality

How Dual Language Learning Could Help Curb Education Inequality | Dual Language and English Learner Education | Scoop.it
More than 17 percent of Texas’ public school students learned a language other than English first. There are a number of approaches to teaching these
Sheyla Shreck's curator insight, May 1, 2016 12:08 PM
This was an interesting statement, “... when we see so many low economic families being denied bilingualism with the excuse that you have to learn English, English only....then you have these same students who are told forget Spanish, they reach high school, and the high school counselor says you know if you want to get into college you have to have three years of a foreign language. Then you have kids named Gonzalez and Suarez who fail Spanish 1 in high school, because they are successful products of the system.” I find it interesting when people make comments such as "I took four years of a foreign language, but don't remember anything" How fantastic it is when children learn foreign languages early in life and grow up bilingual. High school and college courses could then be about refining skills and teaching more advanced courses instead of acquiring a new language. The research available shows the benefits of learning a new language in infancy for both bilingual and monolingual learners.
