Redefining the city through social software: Two examples of open source locative art in Italian urban space | Timeto | First Monday

In this paper, I compare the work of the Guerrilla Spam collective (GS), which works mainly with analog technologies such as b/w manifestos that they stick up on urban walls, and the work of Salvatore Iaconesi and Oriana Persico (Art is Open Source, aka AOS), who work with digital platforms and open source software production. I show how space can be localized and mobilized at the same time, and how space is conceived as situated and generative by different technologies which share a bottom–up approach that creates new forms of experience of the urban, resignifying its everyday codes. For this reason, I adopt an analytical framework that, drawing on actor-network theory and non–representational theory, underlines the performative aspects of both space and information and helps redefine concepts such as location and software in a processual and performative way. Comparing the actions of GS and AOS brings to the fore the importance of horizontal social practices and sociotechnical associations without which cities could not be intelligent nor could technologies be smart. Through their artistic interventions, urban space is recontextualized and activated by means of multi–authorial performances in which ordinary codes acquire shared meanings that allow for collaborative and open source practices.

Replacing The User Story

Replacing The User Story | DTA | Scoop.it

The first problem is that we start with a Persona, which is a very bad idea, and then plop in an action which we think should be taken in order to achieve the expected outcome.

This is a very good way to challenge and reflect about your design-decisions.
Stop hiding behind personas and assumptions and go for the best solution out there.

Networked Society City Index Report 2013

Executive Summary Cities are already home to more than half of the world’s population and, according to United Nations forecasts1, by 2050 two-thirds of us will be city-dwellers. At the same time, cities are experiencing rapid technological development, driven by cloud-based services and more powerful mobile devices, sensors, big data and analytics. In this emerging Networked Society, intelligent networks will be critical to the basic functioning of our cities and to their success in meeting current and emerging challenges. A key challenge for cities is to utilize the full potential of citizens while maintaining sustainable development from the economic, social and environmental perspectives. To compete in a global market, cities must find new ways to increase efficiency, productivity and innovation. From a social perspective, cities will need to meet rising expectations for access to, and the quality of, government, healthcare, education and other public services.

The Network City

The Network City | DTA | Scoop.it

“Only connect,” the writer E. M. Forster said famously — and modern scientists working with network structures are learning how right he was. Forster was talking about how to tell a good story, but it turns out that the same principles for creating richly interconnected structures do apply to making good cities, or other good designs. And what’s all the more interesting (and important) is how bad we’ve gotten at this in recent years — and why that came to pass. Jane Jacobs, the great urbanist and economist, put these ideas to intelligent use in her observation of what made cities such evident crucibles of economic productivity. It was proximities, she said, and networks of proximity, that allowed people to exchange knowledge and creative activities.

It's spooky how what happens in the brain, in small groups and in other systems appears so self similar. Makes me wonder if, in amongst the deep similarities and simple rules, there isn't some way to predict and even shape more.
