The Big Lie in Education.

The Big Lie in Education. | SchoolWide SEL (Social Emotional Learning) | Scoop.it
“Preparing kids for the Real World” is a phrase that many educators and schools use without regard for the consequence of what they selectively choose as reality for their students. Both educators ...
Mary Perfitt-Nelsons insight:

"We live in a technology-driven society. Unless we choose to live in a commune in the woods or the desert, that will not change. Technology has permeated every part of our lives. It takes one lightning strike on your house to learn that lesson. In addition to all phones and electronics, even your home heating unit and ice maker will have computer chips that will need to be replaced."

"As educators we no longer get to choose whether or not we use technology. If our goals, as well as we as educators, are to be believed, and we truly are preparing our students for the real world, we must concede that that world abounds with technology and there are no other choices."

"Now the questions arise, are our teachers trained and supported in technology use. Are the buildings adequately tooled for technology? Are administrators devising new, and updating antiquated policies to meet the challenges of teaching with technology? If we are not doing these things, are we then lying to our children when we tell them that we are preparing them for their future?"

SEL Frameworks?  What is that?!

SEL Frameworks?  What is that?! | SchoolWide SEL (Social Emotional Learning) | Scoop.it
Mary Perfitt-Nelsons insight:

The terms "frameworks" is often confusing for practitioners.  What exactly is a framework and how does it differ from a model?

Find out here!

"A framework is simply a tool that helps organize ideas in order to provide a foundation for thinking, communicating, and acting. Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is a field with a growing number of different frameworks. However, having so many frameworks can be confusing, and selecting a framework or combining frameworks can be difficult. Finding a useful framework can help provide a foundation for SEL assessment and improvement efforts."

Mary Perfitt-Nelsons insight:

"McGrath and Davies argue that school needs to keep up with the times by promoting creativity, entrepreneurship, design thinking and hands on skills. McGrath’s experience teaching design problems has convinced him that the approach includes all learning styles, brings the best of project-based learning, encourages cooperation and integrates subject matter horizontally. But mostly, McGrath and Davies are impressed at the cool stuff kids design."

Mary Perfitt-Nelsons insight:

"As we continue to shift the paradigm of what public education needs to be, it is imperative that we consider what we value and how we present it to the students. High stakes testing doesn’t do the trick. We need to find a more inclusive approach that values many modes of learning and intelligence."

Special Education in High School Redesign

Mary Perfitt-Nelsons insight:

Students with disabilities and the special education programs that serve
them are significant stakeholders in the outcomes of the reforms being
implemented (McGlaughlin & Thurlow, 2003). Policymakers, researchers,
and practitioners in the last decade have called for examination of the intended
and unintended consequences of reform efforts and for effective programs for all
secondary students.

Aligning SEL Frameworks:  Tools Coming Soon!

Aligning SEL Frameworks:  Tools Coming Soon! | SchoolWide SEL (Social Emotional Learning) | Scoop.it

A broad and deep body of research shows that social, emotional, and related
“nonacademic” skills are important to success in school, work, and life. However,
the field is beset by dilemmas about how best to measure and promote skills
in this area, in large part because the field is structured around a large number
of organizing systems – or frameworks – that often use different and at times
conflicting terminology to define and describe skills.

Finally, measuringsel.casel.org is coming up with a set of tools to help school teams align frameworks and determine if all needs are being met.

We know that SEL is essential for students to thrive in school and in life. It is critical that we have data that accurately identify essential SEL student and adult skills. Ultimately these data must inform our policies, improve our climate, and inspire our practices to ensure equitable outcomes for all."

Employers’ Challenge to Educators: Make School Relevant to Students’ Lives

Employers’ Challenge to Educators: Make School Relevant to Students’ Lives | SchoolWide SEL (Social Emotional Learning) | Scoop.it
Business leaders call on K-12 and higher education institutions to graduate students with the skills demanded by the marketplace.
Mary Perfitt-Nelsons insight:

Tony Wagner:  "“Content knowledge has to be engaging to kids,” Wagner said. “If kids aren’t motivated, you can pour content knowledge in their heads and it comes right out the other ear.”

"Wagner highlighted schools in the deeper learning network like New Tech Network, Expeditionary Learning, High Tech High and Big Picture as school models that are aiming to fulfill many of these qualities. “Students are learning many more real world skills, as well as content knowledge, through projects,” Wagner said. “They’re doing work worth doing. They’re doing work that’s interesting, and engaging.”"

"Wagner half-jokingly advocated for “Dream Directors” in schools, whose job it would be to help students identify their dreams and scaffold tasks to help students obtain the skills needed for that dream. "

That is it...........we need to be dream directors  and we need to ask the kids what they need and want more.  They do have the answers.

The Way To Always Have 'Ineffective' Teachers

The Way To Always Have 'Ineffective' Teachers | SchoolWide SEL (Social Emotional Learning) | Scoop.it
If you define "bad teacher" as "whoever is standing in front of these low-testing students," it doesn't matter who stands there. Whoever it is, he's ineffective....
Mary Perfitt-Nelsons insight:

"In other words, by focusing on a bogus definition of effectiveness, you actually have no idea of which teachers are great for a particular classroom. It's not just that the reformster definition of "effective" is unjust and unfair; its innate wrongness will actively thwart any attempts to make anything better. It's almost -- almost -- as if reformsters actually want public schools to fail."
