Automation Needs To Make Way For Marketing Intelligence - CMO.com

But even for the best in the business, the predominant form of profiling and personalization is still behaviorally based. Even when attitudinal dimensions have managed to elbow their way into the personas, they rarely make their way into the actual customer experience.

I’ve seen some excellent examples of reading a customer’s digital body language to understand a prospective buyer, but it’s nothing that would come close to a truly great salesperson doing the real thing (i.e., in-person reading of a customer’s body language). Just think how powerful that could be if marketing automation systems could be taught to do it.

I believe this will be the next level of intelligent marketing to emerge after we’ve all made it past “automation”--which, if you think about it, isn’t really that high a standard to set.

To improve on what’s happening right now, it would be great to see more salespeople reinventing themselves as masters of digitizing the sales process to truly bring their expertise to bear on the world of marketing automation. It’s all about marketing at the moment, and many of the marketers, who are quick to point out the flaws of their sales organizations, are still not as expert as they need to be in the art and science of selling. This represents a huge opportunity for sales experts to not only survive the one-million-person-cull but to one day actually help design the intelligent marketing systems of the future.

Why Marketing Operations is the Heart of your Marketing Team

Why Marketing Operations is the Heart of your Marketing Team | Digital Marketing | Scoop.it

Digest...

1. Marketing Operations is the Liaison to Your Marketing Automation Partner

If your focus is demand generation, acquiring new names for your database is your primary goal. This doesn’t leave you much time to invest in education. A marketing operations person is dedicated to learning the technical ins and outs for you.

2. Marketing Operations Helps You Justify Your Marketing Spend

Today’s marketers face very different challenges than they did a mere five years ago, and we’re learning to earn our seats at the revenue table quantitative measurements. Because marketing operations doesn’t have a quota to hit, they can be 100% objective.  They can then be responsible for the campaigns and programs that set lead scoring, lead source and your revenue model.  It’s a great way to ensure the numbers are attributed fairly.

3. Marketing Operations Has Your Back

As anti-spam legislation continues to evolve in complexity, it’s becoming more important than ever to control who has access to your database.

Making marketing technology work | McKinsey & Company

Making marketing technology work | McKinsey & Company | Digital Marketing | Scoop.it
It has become well established that people are using an increasing range of tools and technologies—from social media to smartphones—to help make more informed purchasing decisions. That evolution is, in turn, transforming marketing into an increasingly technical function requiring new roles, such as that of the marketing technologist. In this interview, Scott Brinker, cofounder and chief technology officer (CTO) of ion interactive, and Jason Heller, global leader of McKinsey Digital Marketing Operations, explain that the most important changes businesses must make to take advantage of technology often have little to do with the technology itself.

With great marketing technology spending comes great ROI responsibility.

It's a defined starting point that is critical to making fundamental changes.

Where are These MarTech Vendors? , and the Top 12 Marketing Technology Articles Curated Wednesday, 9/24/14 | Digital Marketing | Scoop.it

Maybe I missed this, or maybe it is stealthily under development somewhere, but I’m still waiting for a company offering the following to emerge:

Personalized Visuals

The web is visual, and we know the fast growing value of visuals as a means to communicate with our audience (especially video). And of course we know the value of personalization. So I’m still waiting for:

>> Personalized infographics

>> Personalized decks

>> Personalized video

>> Personalized animation

Using Predictive to Persona-tag

Personas are constantly moving. The audience’s actual persona doesn’t change, but the way we define the persona segments constantly changes as we learn more about each segment. There has to be a way to apply predictive analytics to personas so that we can dynamically tag individuals as they start their buyer’s journey, and dynamically adjust those personas as information flows in.

Use of 3D Printing

Forget wearables. How will B2B marketers use 3D printing? For B2B products, it seems fairly simple: replicating a product to scale for delivery to prospects (then sending “samples” via USPS/UPS/Fedex, bringing direct mail back-to-life). But for services?

Overcoming Marketing Technology Myopia, and the Top 12 Marketing Technology Articles Curated Monday, 9/22/14

Overcoming Marketing Technology Myopia, and the Top 12 Marketing Technology Articles Curated Monday, 9/22/14 | Digital Marketing | Scoop.it

Recently, I put together an intricate outbound campaign for a client that included multiple types of follow-ons with multiple types of content to multiple audience segments. It was a solid 4 hours just to map out (thank you large whiteboard) and, if I may say so, it was quite creative. And not at all possible without marketing automation.

And there lies the issue with many, many users of marketing technology: myopia.

Take a look at the Help section of any marketing automation application, and you’ll find introductory notes, help on basic functions, and help on more advanced functions. Wonderful. And marketers go ahead and execute on these functions in accordance to the rules of the application, and live very happy and fulfilling marketing lives.

Unfortunately, they’re executing on what the vendor defines as the application’s functionality without any imagination or foresight of what can be done with the application! And it all starts with asking the question “what if?”

Example: what if we created a personalized web page for each user, and what if we created three personalized web pages for each user? What if we linked those web pages together via a top level menu? And what if we populated those pages with personalized content? And what if we could apply analytics to understand what worked and what didn’t? And what if we started to conduct A/B and MVT that would allow us to optimize? You’re not going to find this in the vendor’s FAQs!

Think of your marketing automation application as a palette of colors from which you can exercise creativity that can be measured and improved. It’s this wonderful series of individual tools (functions) that are integrated permitting you to sit back and wonder “what if?”

So go beyond the boundaries of the application’s stated functions and break through the myopia. Get creative and see things that are possible with the colors on your palette.

Ad Tech and Marketing Automation Have Finally Collided - Ad Age

Ad Tech and Marketing Automation Have Finally Collided - Ad Age | Digital Marketing | Scoop.it

Excerpt...

Marketing automation tools are also often only as good as the lists fed into them, meaning they aren't useful for marketers that don't have significant databases of prospects. This is where the data platforms -- Acxiom, Turn, and recent Oracle acquisition BlueKai -- come in. They allow marketers to take their lists of known prospects and form audience clusters with similar characteristics that can be reached with ads.

Maureen Little, Sr. VP business development at Turn, said the integration allows marketers to pick desirable segments within their marketing-automation platform, and expand those specific groups. "I can say, 'Gosh, this is such a valuable segment; how many more people can I find that look like it?'" she said. "They will be able to say 'I just took the audience that is a couple hundred thousand and I believe that I've found 1.2 million people who look significantly like this consumer.'"
