How banning the African drum gave birth to American music | Chris Johnson | TEDxHudson

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. How can we understand a culture if its very means of communication have been banned? Chris Johnson examines the role of the drum in African American Culture and American History.

Contributing to the contemporary scholarship surrounding African American culture, Chris Johnson looks to the past and the present for defining symbols. Johnson is currently an independent scholar, most recently an Assistant Professor of Culture and Mediaat Eugene Lang College in New York City. As a Fulbright Senior Scholar, both teaching and doing research, at Westfälische Wilhelms-Universitat in Münster, Germany and a Research Fellow at the W.E.B. Du Bois Institute for Afro-American Research at Harvard University, Johnson has focused on the role African culture has played in shaping ideas in American society. He and his wife reside in New York City and Hudson. | blackvistas.com

The Rites of Passage as a Cultural Retooling Process for Black Youth in their Adolescent-to-Adulthood Transition –

The Rites of Passage as a Cultural Retooling Process for Black Youth in their Adolescent-to-Adulthood Transition – | diaspora edition sankofa | Scoop.it
Promoting Ethnic Identity Development in African American Youth: The Role of Rites of Passage https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/00957984960223008 Abstract Contemporary adolescent rites-of-passage interventions within the African American community are designed to positively influence the ethnic identity of African American youth through activities that provide historical and cultural information, teach intellectual and social skills, and promote values that are consistent with African American culture and community needs. Unfortunately, it is unclear how consistent these interventions are with current developmental research and theory. This article presents and describes the adolescent developmental pathways paradigm (ADPP), a rites-of-passage modelforAfrican American youth that provides a developmentalframework for ethnic identity development and integrates it into the current literature on adolescent rites of passage. Particular attention is given to the ecological context within which adolescent-focused interventions currently operate and have been shown to be effective. The implications of the ADPPfor adolescent development, community empowerment, social change, andfuture research are also discussed.
