## Ideas for Teaching Fractions

Lots of creative ideas for teaching fractions to elementary students
Jack Rudy's insight:

These are different ways that teachers can take real world objects and adapt them to a lesson on fractions. My sixth graders should have came into the year with a base of fractions but realisticly they did not. Students came in not understanding the basics of fractions. We needed to do a lot of review. These are many ways that teachers can introduce or review the concept of fractions to engage and connect with students. I would use some of these ideas to really reinforce the ideas and concepts. This website also gives strategies to connect the idea of fractions around different classes. One example is using fractions in spelling. You have the students write the spelling words down. In the next colum student write down the fraction fo vowels to the whole and so on. These would be great ideas to use throughout fraction unit in school and in many different grades.

Students that are stuggling with adding, subracting, renaming mixed fractions, etc... This website alows students to pick and decide the area they would like to work on. Students are able to do a problem and then ask for an explantion if they get the problem wrong or just guessed. It will help student to get that automatic feedback on their work.

## Cool Math 4 Kids Fraction Lessons and Games

Cool Math free online fractions lessons and games - Learn how to do fractions in a clear and easy way!
Jack Rudy's insight:

This website goes into many different aspects of math but what I focused on was the fraction section. This website went into all aspects of the concept of fractions. Once you clicked on the the link then it takes you to a mini lesson. It walks students through some steps on how to work with fractions depending on the content. At the end it gives the students the practice problems for them to work on. The website also had games for students. I feel that this website would be good to use as added help or as part of a small group rotation. Some way that you can use this website is during a flipped classroom lesson because the website give some instruction on how to solve a problem. This will give students the ability to explore and learn on their own. I feel that resources that gives students engaging problems and then reinforces that with explainations can really improve a students understanding.

## F is for First Grade: Fractions are my favorite

Jack Rudy's insight:

This blog shows a very interactive way to assist students with using fractions. This is a great activites when introduce simple equivalant fractions. This lesson might not be at a sixth grade level but taking this thinking into a sixth grade classroom could make the idea of fractions more interesting to the students. I feel using these hands on activities using things the students know and understand can really make the level of engagement of the student to another level.
