Description by The Scout Report "PlayDecide is a free card game in which players learn about a particular topic, engage with different perspectives, and discuss the topic to refine their opinions and seek group consensus. Each 90-minute game can accommodate 4-8 players (recommended for ages 13 and up), which makes PlayDecide an excellent classroom resource for teachers or a team-building tool for professionals, organizations, and administrators. The gameplay (which is explained in a handy PDF guide, found by clicking "PlayDecide basics" on the page linked above) consists of three phases. In the first phase, players familiarize themselves with the issue at hand (e.g., "Young people in the media," "Future food systems," "Plastic pollution"). In the second phase, players share their opinions, listen to others, and refine their perspectives. In the final phase, the group approaches the issue together and players vote on their positions. PlayDecide games cover more than 350 topics and are available in 30 languages. The game is available under a Creative Commons license and materials for different topics are freely available to download (note: to download games, users will need to create a free account). PlayDecide was developed as part of a project funded by the European Union and coordinated by Ecsite, the European network of science centers and museums." Description by The Scout Report "Art teachers at the elementary and middle-school levels will want to check out the articles, videos, and other resources on color theory available from The Art of Education University (featured in the 11-20-2020 Scout Report), a fully online graduate university offering accredited degrees for art teachers. The resources were created by experienced art teachers to facilitate art education through lesson plans, activity ideas, and games for the classroom. For instance, the article "You Don't Have to Teach the Color Wheel Anymore," describes this outdated concept for exposing students to color theory and offers four engaging and nuanced alternatives. Another article, "7 Ways to Use Paint Chips in the Art Room," offers activity ideas using those free color palettes from the paint section of any hardware store. "Some 75% of the world’s volcanoes live along the aptly name Ring of Fire. This makes sense. Hugging a boundary between tectonic pates, the Ring of Fire is an open seam on the planet’s interior. But then there’s Hawaii, a chain of volcanic islands smack in the middle of the Pacific plate, far from any boundaries. What feeds its fire? "Scientists have long theorized that columns of superheated rock—piping hot plumes pushing through the mantle to the crust above—explain the Hawaiian islands and other areas like them. Where these columns touch the surface, volcanic hotspots form and the ground erupts. Over millions of years, inch by inch, the Earth’s tectonic plates drag new ground over hotspots and form long volcanic chains. "The theory is old, but actually observing the mantle plumes feeding these hotspots in any detail is fairly new. “Theoretically, we know [plumes] have to exist,” Harriet Lau, a University of California, Berkeley geophysicist told Quanta Magazine. “But they’re just so hard to see seismically.” "Now, however, in a particularly striking example, a team of scientists have completed a map of the underworld nearly a decade in the making." Visual Story Lab is Resource Media's visual storytelling resource hub-a place for nonprofits to hone their infographics and image strategy. "Silenzio, Bruno!
Silenzio, Bruno! Is this sentence familiar to you? If not, you need to watch Luca, the most recent animated movie from Pixar. This movie brings a unique lesson to creativity. Don’t worry, I promise not to reveal any spoilers, but I need to explain what this sentence means. In one scene in the movie, Luca is afraid of trying something for the first time. His friend Alberto says, “I know your problem. You have a Bruno in your head. Don’t listen to him. Shut him up. Say, ‘Silenzio, Bruno!’ In the movie, saying “Silenzio, Bruno” is a way of naming and thereby taming this fear. This sentence became Luca’s mantra, and he repeated this sentence every time he needed to be brave.
"The Voice of Fear
‘Bruno” is the voice of fear, that inner voice that constantly tells us what not to do. When we are doing things for the first time and entering an unknown area, it’s natural that fear shows up. However, fear can be one of creativity’s worst enemies, and it can even kill creativity. Fear prevents us from going further, trying new ways of doing things, being original, exploring new possibilities, and extending the boundaries.

This is the story of how I created a botnet of IPTVs to rickroll 10,000+ students for my senior prank. Description by Stephen Downes "This is a great story of how students hacked the bells and display system in their school division, replacing the usual messages with a rickroll. The article tells us almost everything (it keeps some of the exploits under wraps) including even some of the code. The author was also at great pains to show how they were careful to avoid any disruption or damage, and how they documented every step and (eventually) worked with administrators to secure the system. There are many great lessons in this post and it should be shared widely with computing science teachers and enthusiastic student programmers. Via Twit." Description by The Scout Project "The ambiguity and openness of works of art makes them wonderful objects for critical analysis and reasoning. Teachers and art lovers will enjoy this free online professional development course from the National Gallery of Art (previously featured in the 03-27-2020 edition of the Scout Report). Adapted from the museum's professional development programs for teachers, Teaching Critical Thinking through Art prepares educators to use artworks to help their students develop and strengthen critical thinking skills. In five lessons, educators will learn how to facilitate classroom conversations about art, encourage learners of all levels to use evidence-based reasoning, and integrate online teaching resources from the National Gallery of Art into lesson plans. Even non-educators will want to take advantage of the opportunity to explore and think critically about the featured works of art. The course can be completed in three ways: directly on the page linked above, through EdX (linked on the same page), or in a series of YouTube videos (linked under "Watch and Listen" in the menu on the left side of the page).
